Nancy Haraldson

Nancy Ann Haraldson, age 67, of Pipestone, Minnesota, passed away on Saturday, June 11, 2022, at her home in Pipestone.
A visitation will be on Friday, June 17, 2022, from 4 to 8 p.m. at the St. Paul Lutheran Church in Pipestone. A funeral service will be on Saturday, June 18, 2022, at 10:30 a.m. at the Church. Interment will be in the New Woodlawn Cemetery in Pipestone.

Nancy Ann Haraldson was born on March 23, 1955, to Richard and Janice (Bucher) Stimson in Pipestone, Minnesota. She was baptized on May 15, 1955, at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Pipestone and confirmed on March 22, 1970, at Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church in Pipestone. During her childhood she participated in FHA 1&2, Future Teachers of America 3, Chorus 9, and student council 4-alternate. She was the captain of the Arrowettes and a member of the National Honor Society – 4. Nancy graduated in 1973 from Pipestone Central High School. Following graduation she attended Pipestone Vo-Tech where she studied being a financial secretary.
Nancy was united in marriage to Larry Haraldson on August 10, 1974 in Pipestone. Together they made their home in Pipestone and were blessed with three children, Stacy, Jeremy, and Nick. Nancy worked as a secretary at Bucher Realty from 1974-1975, had a home day care from 1976-1980, was a teller at Pipestone Federal from 1981-1985, and a loan processor at First National Bank from 1985 until the time of her retirement in 2015.
Nancy was a member of Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church in Pipestone where she was the Sunday school superintendent and was later a member at St. Paul Lutheran Church. Nancy participated in Relay for Life, the Pipestone Women of Today, and the hospice supper. She enjoyed crafting, painting, and being around children of all ages. Nancy especially loved spending time with her grandchildren, family, and friends.
She will be remembered for her kindness, willingness to help everybody, being devoted to her family, her wisdom, her words of encouragement, her love for children, and patience with everybody. She will be deeply missed.
Nancy is survived by her husband of 47 years, Larry; children Stacy (Ryan) DeBates of Luverne, Minnesota, Jeremy (Jenica) Haraldson of Harrisburg, South Dakota, and Nick (Brandi) Haraldson of Harrisburg; grandchildren Brody, Jenna, and Trevor DeBates, Jaylyn, Jax, and Jep Haraldson, and Elsie and Vera Haraldson; sister Betty Schoolmeester; mother-in-law Luella Haraldson; uncle William Carstensen; and many other family and friends.
She was preceded in death by her father, Richard Stimson; mother, Janice Frey; stepfather James Frey; brothers Rick Stimson and David Stimson; aunt Sandy Carstensen; grandfather Arley Bucher; grandmother Vi Bucher; father-in-law Clarence Haraldson; and brother-in-law Don Schoolmeester.

Janice Hume

Janice Marie Hume, 83, Hendricks, died Saturday, June 11, 2022, at Hendricks Hospice in Hendricks.
Visitation will begin at 10 a.m. Friday, June 17, at Heartland Funeral Home in Brandon, South Dakota, with a funeral service at 11 a.m. A time of fellowship will follow the service at Heartland. Burial will be at a later date at Brockville Cemetery in rural Newton, Illinois.

Janice Marie Wold was born on Aug. 18, 1938, in Dunn County, Wisconsin, to Rudolph and Eva (Allram) Wold. Janice was a graduate of Boyceville High School, Boyceville, Wisconsin.
She married Lloyd Hume on Dec. 7, 1957. Through Lloyd’s government employment, they lived in many locations and met and made many friends.
Janice was a member of Brandon Lutheran Church in Brandon. She was a member of the Eagles Club in Luverne and Newton, Illinois, and Welcome Wagon Club in Collinsville, Illinois.
Janice worked at the Luverne Hospital Nursery, admitting newborns.
Janice enjoyed bowling on numerous leagues, painting, serving as a school crossing guard in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, making lefsa with the church, and was naturally gifted in playing the accordion and piano. She was a Vikings and Twins fan and enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Janice is survived by her four children, Randy (Anita) Hume, Hendricks, Greg Hume, Tumacacori, Arizona, Nancy (Tim) Mulligan, St. Charles, Iowa, and Deanna (Dick) Owens, Columbus Junction, Iowa; eight grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; one sister-in-law, Myra Wold; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Marilyn Schmidt

Marilyn Ann Schmidt, 83, Luverne, died peacefully on Saturday, June 11, 2022, at the Sanford Luverne Hospice Cottage.
A memorial service will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, June 23, with visitation beginning at 9:30 a.m., at St. John Lutheran Church in Luverne. Burial will follow at Trinity Cemetery near Steen.
Marilyn Ann Schmidt was born April 22, 1939, to Albert and Olga (Groth) Schmidt in Flandreau, South Dakota. She was baptized on May 14, 1939, in Ward, South Dakota, and confirmed on April 26, 1953, in Rock Rapids, Iowa. She was raised in Steen with her Aunt Ida and Uncle Walter Tecken. She attended elementary school in Steen and Hills High School in Hills, graduating in 1957. She then attended the Minnesota School of Business and graduated in April of 1958.
By May of 1958 Marilyn was working for the Navy Department in the personnel office, first in Washington, D.C., and later in Chicago, Illinois. In 1965 she moved to Atlanta, Georgia, and worked with the Defense Supply Agency in personnel. After two years she began to work for the Food and Drug Administration.
In 1970 Marilyn moved back to Luverne and worked as a waitress and cook at the Blue Mound Inn until its closing in 2001. She then continued cooking at Luverne Sanford Hospital and formally retired from the hospital in March of 2009.
Marilyn was an active member of St. John Lutheran Church in Luverne, where she sang in the choir and served with the Chancel Guild, the Board of Evangelism, and was a newsletter and labels volunteer. Marilyn was an avid reader, enjoyed scrapbooking, puzzles and was a sports fan, especially of the Minnesota Twins.
She is survived by her seven siblings, Richard Schmidt of Albany, Carol (Dallas) Dohlmann of Magnolia, Darlene Brown of Lancaster, South Carolina, Steven (Deb) Schmidt of Burnsville, Laurie (Delbert) Gangestad of Kenneth, Michael (Lori) Schmidt of Lincoln, Nebraska, and Judy Wiese (Tim Totman) of Pipestone; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Olga and Albert Schmidt; stepmother Hilda Schmidt; brother and sister-in-law Ron and Mary Schmidt; brother Jim Schmidt; and sister Londa Schmidt.

Albert 'Sonny' Matthiesen

Albert “Sonny” Matthiesen, 81, Worthington, died peacefully on Thursday, May 26, 2022, at Sanford Worthington Hospital.
Visitation will be from 4 to 6 p.m. Thursday, June 16, at Hartquist Funeral Home in Luverne. A funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday, June 17, at St. John Lutheran Church in Luverne. Burial will follow at Maplewood Cemetery in Luverne.
Albert “Sonny” Mathew Peter Matthiesen was born on May 13, 1941, to Albert and Meta (Bendt) Matthiesen in Luverne. He was raised on a farm between Kanaranzi and Luverne. At a young age, Albert and his family moved to Magnolia. He attended school in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, until he was 18 years old. He then moved to Worthington and worked in the adult achievement center for his career.
While in Worthington, Albert affectionately took on the nickname of “Sonny.” He became a champion of the community. He loved attending town festivities, most notably Turkey Days and sporting events for the Worthington Trojans and Minnesota West Bluejays. He also participated on a local bowling team and enjoyed listening to music and attending concerts. He also loved riding his trike around town.
As noted in remarks left on Sonny’s memorial tribute, he was a simple and sincere man. He had a wonderful life full of love and friendships. It was noted that once Sonny met you, he’d remember your name and come up to you and ask you how you were doing. He always had a smile on his face and had a way of making others smile.
He is survived by his two sisters, Connie Frahm of Magnolia, and Ellann Petersen of Yankton, South Dakota; five nieces and nephews, Lynn (Marlan) De Berg of Luverne, James (Rae) Frahm of Ellsworth, JoAnn (Jim) Gumto of Jackson, Carey (Linda) Petersen of Omaha, Nebraska, and Matt (Kim) Petersen of Burke, South Dakota; and other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents.

Bakken, girls' 4-by-100 team take home seventh-place finish at state track meet

The Hills-Beaver Creek Lady Pates 4-by-100 meter relay team consisting of Abbie Harris, Brynn Rauk, Layla Deelstra and Brynn Bakken traveled to St. Michael-Albertville High School Thursday afternoon to compete in the Class A State Track and Field Meet.
Bakken also qualified for the 100- and 200-meter dashes. 
The top nine qualifiers in the preliminary races Thursday afternoon moved on to the finals on Friday afternoon.
Bakken ran the first race of the day Thursday afternoon in the 100-meter dash where she was able to qualify for the finals with a time of 12.80.
The 4-by-100 team was also able to qualify for finals after beating their own school record with a time of 51.04.
Bakken finished off the day by just missing out on finals in the 200-meter dash with an 11th place finish and a time of 27.06.
Bakken ran in the 100-meter finals where she ended up with a seventh-place finish in the Minnesota Class A State meet with a time of 12.79. It was a very tight race from first place through ninth place.
Bakken finished just .37 seconds behind the first-place finisher in the state, marking a significant accomplishment for the Lady Pates seventh-grader.
The 4-by-100 team also placed seventh in the finals Friday afternoon. Harris, Rauk, Deelstra and Bakken once again upped their own school record in another tightly contested race with a time of 50.98 seconds.
This was just .9 seconds behind first place. 
It was a very impressive feat with H-BC being one of the smallest schools at the state meet.
A team consisting of a seventh-grader (Bakken), an eighth-grader (Harris), and two sophomores (Rauk and Deelstra) put together quite the season and gave the Patriot fans a lot to cheer for.

Redbirds lose one, win two on the road in past week

The Luverne Redbirds amateur baseball team finished 2-1 in three away games last week to raise their season record to 8-2 overall.
Luverne lost in Windom 4-3 June 8 before picking up a 7-1 win in Atwater Friday night and an 8-2 victory in Kimball Saturday afternoon.
The Redbirds were scheduled to host Lakefield Wednesday night (June 15) after this edition of the Star Herald went to press.
Luverne will travel to Adrian to take on the A’s Friday night before playing the Buttermakers in Hadley Sunday afternoon.
On Wednesday, June 22, the Redbirds will host the Pipestone A’s at 7:30 p.m.
The amateur game will be the final game of a Pipestone at Luverne baseball tripleheader that will also include Junior Legion and Senior Legion games.
 
Windom 4, Luverne 3
 Luverne lost its first game since May 15 when the Redbirds came up just short against the Windom Pirates June 8 at Island Park.
The Pirates had a 4-1 lead after scoring single runs in each of the first four innings.
Luverne scored single runs in the eighth and ninth innings, but came up one run short in the 4-3 loss.
 Ben Serie pitched a complete game for the Birds. Serie struck out 18 Pirates and gave up six hits, five walks and four runs.
Serie also led Luverne at the plate with two hits, one run and one RBI. He also tallied two stolen bases.
Derek Lundgren blasted a triple and scored one run. Gaige Nath also scored in the game.

Luverne 7, Atwater 1
 The Redbirds traveled north to Atwater Friday night and picked up a 7-1 victory over the Chuckers.
Lundgren scored first when Serie hit a line drive single in the first inning.
Luverne scored one more in the second inning when Ethan Beyer crossed home plate after Lundgren grounded out to the shortstop.
The Birds doubled their lead in the third inning.
Cade Wenninger hit a sacrifice fly that scored Serie before a ground ball hit by Beyer scored Jake Haugen.
Lundgren scored his second of three runs in the game during the sixth inning when Skyler Wenninger hit an RBI single.
A two-run home run in the top of the seventh inning by Lundgren also scored Charlie Reisch to extend the Redbird lead over the Chuckers to 7-0.
Atwater scored one run in the bottom of the seventh.
When neither team scored in the final two innings, Luverne left Atwater with a 7-1 victory.
Jake Haugen pitched a complete nine-inning game for the Redbirds.
Haugen gave up six hits and one run while striking out eleven batters.
At the plate, Lundgren scored three runs and added three RBIs off of two hits.
Reisch was three for four with one run scored.

Luverne 11, Kimball 4
 Luverne earned its second road win in two days when the Redbirds took down the Kimball Express 11-4 Saturday afternoon.
The Birds exploded for seven runs in the top of the first inning to set the tone for the game.
The first two batters of the game, Lundgren and Nath, each hit singles before Skyler Wenninger hit a three-run home run to take an early lead, 3-0.
Three batters later, Cade Wenninger hit a triple that scored Haugen, and the next batter, Beyer, hit a ground ball to score Cade Wenninger, bringing the Redbird lead to 5-0.
Beyer scored when Luverne player-manager Brooks Maurer singled. When Reisch stole home, the Birds had a solid 7-0 lead before the Express came to bat.
After scoring one more run in the top of the third, Luverne added two more in the fourth inning.
Lundgren and Nath both scored on a line drive single by Cade Wenninger.
Kimball scored its first run of the game in the fourth inning and would add one run in the sixth and two more in the eighth.
The Redbirds’ eleventh and final run of the contest came in the top of the sixth when a sacrifice fly to center by Cade Wenninger scored his brother, Skyler.
Luverne enjoyed a very balanced offensive effort against the Express.
Lundren, Skyler Wenninger, Haugen and Cade Wenninger all tallied three hits in the game, with Cade Wenninger adding four RBIs and Skyler Wenninger recording three RBIs.
Lundgren was on the mound for the first five innings for the Birds. He gave up four hits and one run while striking out four.
Cade Wenninger came in to pitch the final four innings. He offered four hits and three runs while striking out two and walking two.

LHS team faces stiff competition at state tennis meet

The Luverne boys’ tennis team faced some stiff competition at the Minnesota Class A State Tournament last week.
The Cardinals, playing in their 12th consecutive state tournament, faced No. 1-ranked St. Paul Academy/Summit School in the quarterfinal round of the state meet Tuesday, June 7, in Minneapolis.
Luverne lost 7-0 to SPA/SS, which went on to win the team state championship over The Breck School 5-2.
With the loss, LHS moved to the consolation bracket of the team tournament to face Minnewaska Area/Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa Tuesday afternoon.
The Cardinals fell to Minnewaska Area/BBE 6-1 to complete their 2022 season. LHS ended the season with an 18-7 record.
“I was proud of how these guys played all season and they should be, too,” said Lucas Larson, LHS head coach.
“We tried our hardest and represented Luverne well,” Larson said. “They made coaching incredibly easy for me, and I thank them for that.”
 
SPA/SS 7, Luverne 0
There was little doubt as to why St. Paul Academy/Summit School was the No. 1-ranked team in Class A boys’ tennis when the Cardinals faced SPA/SS in the opening round of the state tournament the morning of June 7.
LHS senior Pierce Cunningham, playing at No. 1 singles, lost his first match of the season 6-4, 6-3 to Kai Sih.
The closest match of the meet was at No. 2 singles.
Luverne’s Griffen Jarchow won the first set 7-6 over Harry Mahmi before losing the second set 6-4 forcing a tiebreaker third set. He lost the tiebreaker 13-11.
At No. 3 singles, Blake Frahm lost to Alex Moore 7-6(2), 6-2 and Ethan Nath was defeated by Zahir Hassan 6-0, 6-0 at No. 4 singles.
In doubles play, Chance Tunnissen and Logan Ommen lost to Leo Benson and Maik Nguyen 6-0, 6-0 at No. 1 doubles.
At No. 2 doubles, Kyle Ferguson and Jase Arp were defeated 6-1, 6-2 by Jacob Colton and Baasit Mahmood.
Luke Bosch and Spencer Kracht lost 6-0, 6-0 to Henry Choi and Allan Wang at No. 3 doubles.
 
Minnewaska Area/BBE 6, Luverne 1
The Cardinals faced Minnewaska Area/Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa in the consolation round of the state tournament June 7 in Minneapolis.
Minnewaska Area/BBE had lost to Rock Ridge of Virginia 4-3 earlier in the day in the quarterfinal round.
The Cardinals lost to Minnewaska Area/BBE 6-1.
Luverne’s lone win against the Lakers and in state team tournament overall came at the No. 2 singles match.
Jarchow defeated Gannon Walsh 6-3, 7-9 (5) and 10-7.
At No. 1 singles, Cunningham lost to Tate Reichmann, the No. 4-ranked singles player in Class A, 6-1, 6-0.
Both the No. 3 and No. 4 singles matches went to an extra set to determine the winner, but LHS lost both matches.
At No. 3 singles, Frahm lost to Ethan Quelle 6-3, 5-7, 10-6 and Nath was defeated 6-3, 5-7, 10-8 at No. 4 singles.
Tunnissen and Ommen fell to Damon Uhde and Nik VanDyke 6-0, 7-5 at No. 1 doubles.
At No. 2 doubles, Ferguson and Arp lost to Connor Quelle and Tenzin Dahl 6-1, 6-4.
Bosch and Kracht, playing at No. 3 doubles, were defeated 6-2, 6-0 by Noah Palmer and Alec Larson.

Cunningham, Jarchow, Frahm compete at state tennis tournament

Luverne High School was represented by one singles player and one doubles team at the Minnesota Class A State Individual Tennis Tournament last week in Minneapolis.
Pierce Cunningham qualified after repeating as the Section 3A singles champion this season.
Griffen Jarchow and Blake Frahm, who had competed at No. 2 and No. 3 singles respectively for the regular season, formed a doubles team for the section individual tournament.
Jarchow and Frahm won the section doubles championship to advance to the state individual tournament.
At the state individual meet June 9-10, Cunningham lost his first match to Michael Frost of Holy Family Catholic in Victoria 6-4, 1-6, 7-5.
Cunningham won his first consolation match 6-0, 6-3 over Winfield Stephens of Providence Academy of Plymouth.
In the consolation semifinals, Cunningham was defeated by Mason Woelfel of Litchfield 6-2, 6-1.
In doubles play, Jarchow and Frahm opened with a 6-4, 6-2 loss to John Gorman and Enrico Petto of The Breck School (Minneapolis).
In consolation play, Litchfield’s Alex Draeger and Braden Olson defeated Jarchow and Frahm 6-1, 7-6.

Senior Legion baseball goes 4-2 in opening week

The Luverne Senior American Legion baseball team opened the 2022 season with a very busy week and a half.
Luverne played six straight games at home, including four as part of their home weekend tournament, and went 4-2 during the opening stretch.
The team was scheduled to host Jackson Tuesday, June 14, after this edition of the Star Herald went to press.
Luverne will travel to Slayton tonight (Thursday) and to Ruthton on Monday.
The Senior Legion team will then play the middle game of a Pipestone at Luverne triple-header on Wednesday.
The Junior Legion teams will play at 3:30 p.m., the Senior Legion at 5:30 p.m. and the A’s and Redbirds will play at 7:30 p.m., all at Redbird Field.
 
Luverne 7, Adrian 0
It was a 7-0 opening night victory over Adrian June 6 at Redbird Field for the Luverne Senior American Legion baseball team.  
Luverne scored three runs as a result of walks and passed balls in the first inning.
The hosts then doubled their lead in the fifth inning when Conner Connell hit a two-run double followed by an RBI single by Connor Overgaard.
Zach DeBoer pitched the first five innings for Luverne. He struck out five Adrian batters and gave up two hits, no runs and no walks.
Casey Sehr and Jacob Stroh pitched one inning each of relief, giving up no hits and no runs. Stroh struck out two.

Luverne 5, Renner 4
Luverne opened its home American Legion baseball tournament Friday night with a 5-4 victory over Renner, South Dakota, at Redbird Field.
Luverne led 2-1 after the first inning, which included an RBI double by Connell, and added a third run in the third inning.
Renner scored three runs in the top of the sixth inning to take a 4-3 lead.
Luverne tied the game 4-4 in the bottom of the seventh inning before Riley Sneller hit a walk-off single that scored Connell to win the game.
Connell was two for three at the plate with two runs scored and one RBI.
Casey Sehr tallied two hits, scored two runs and added an RBI in the game.
Sneller was two for two with an RBI.
Kaden Anderson was on the mound for the first five innings for Luverne. He struck out ten hitters and gave up one hit, one run and one walk.
Kai Buss came in to pitch at the start of the sixth inning. He gave up two hits, three runs and one walk.
Casey Sehr replaced Buss on the mound in the sixth. He gave up one hit, two walks, and struck out two.

In the second game of their home tournament, the Luverne Senior Legion team shut out Colton, South Dakota, 10-0 Saturday morning at Redbird Field.
The hosts used a very balanced offense to score two runs in each of the first three innings before adding three runs in the fourth stanza.
With a 9-0 lead entering the bottom of the fifth inning, DeBoer hit a walk-off single to score Patrick Kroski that put the ten-run rule into effect to end the game after five innings.
Casey Sehr was two for three at the plate, scored two runs and added two RBIs.
Braydon Ripka also had two hits and scored twice for Luverne.
Sneller scored two runs and had a double in the fourth inning.
Connell hit a two-RBI double in the first inning.
Casey Sehr was on the mound for the first three innings. He walked one, struck out five and gave up no hits and no runs.
His younger brother Carter pitched the fourth inning, giving up no hits, no runs, no walks and striking out two.
Kroski threw the fifth and final inning. He gave up one hit and struck out two.

Luverne 13, St. James 2
Luverne earned its second five-inning victory of the day Saturday evening when the home team defeated St. James 13-2 to advance to Sunday morning’s tournament championship game.
After scoring a quick four runs in the first inning, Luverne exploded for nine more runs in the second inning.
 Stroh led off the second inning with a double. Casey Sehr then hit a double before Sneller blasted a two-RBI double in the same inning.
Serie then added a tw0-RBI triple to the second-inning offensive eruption.
Kroski also hit a double in the fourth inning.
Carter Sehr pitched the first three innings for Luverne. He gave up two runs off of three hits and struck out two.
Buss pitched 1 1/3 innings, striking out two and giving up no hits and no runs.
Overgaard came to the mound to get the final two outs.

Worthington 6, Luverne 1
Luverne fell to Worthington 6-1 in the championship game of their home tournament Sunday morning.
Worthington scored two runs in the first, three in the third and one more in the fourth to build a 6-1 advantage before Luverne scored its only run of the game.
A home run by Serie to lead off the fifth inning plated Luverne’s only run.  
Ethan Beyer pitched the first four innings for the home team. He gave up ten hits, six runs and one walk while striking out three.
Stroh came in in relief, pitching the final three innings. He offered two hits and struck out one.
“Overall I was happy with the weekend,” Zeutenhorst said, “we just didn’t get that final win.”
“Our pitching was good all tournament,” he said, “that’s a lot of pitching with four games in three days.”
“Worthington was 3-0 in their bracket, too, and really hit the ball well. Sometimes you run into teams like that.”

Worthington 5, Luverne 4
For the second time in two days, Luverne lost to Worthington in Senior Legion baseball at Redbird Field.
After defeating Luverne 6-1 in a tournament championship game Sunday morning, Worthington came back to town Monday night and earned another win, this time a closer 5-4 victory.
The visitors built a 2-0 lead after the first two innings before Luverne scored two runs in the bottom of the third to tie the game.
Luverne had a 4-3 advantage going into the seventh and final inning.
Worthington scored two runs in the top of the final inning.
When Luverne was unable to score in the bottom of the seventh, Worthington won the game.
Anderson led the offense for Luverne. He was two for three at the plate and scored two runs.
Overgaard also had two hits in the game and added two RBIs.
DeBoer pitched the first six innings for Luverne. He gave up eight hits, three runs and one walk while striking out three.
Casey Sehr came in to pitch the final inning. He gave up three hits and two runs, one of which was earned.
