Redbirds lose one, win two on the road in past week

Luverne amateurs now 8-2 for the season

The Luverne Redbirds amateur baseball team finished 2-1 in three away games last week to raise their season record to 8-2 overall.
Luverne lost in Windom 4-3 June 8 before picking up a 7-1 win in Atwater Friday night and an 8-2 victory in Kimball Saturday afternoon.
The Redbirds were scheduled to host Lakefield Wednesday night (June 15) after this edition of the Star Herald went to press.
Luverne will travel to Adrian to take on the A’s Friday night before playing the Buttermakers in Hadley Sunday afternoon.
On Wednesday, June 22, the Redbirds will host the Pipestone A’s at 7:30 p.m.
The amateur game will be the final game of a Pipestone at Luverne baseball tripleheader that will also include Junior Legion and Senior Legion games.
 
Windom 4, Luverne 3
 Luverne lost its first game since May 15 when the Redbirds came up just short against the Windom Pirates June 8 at Island Park.
The Pirates had a 4-1 lead after scoring single runs in each of the first four innings.
Luverne scored single runs in the eighth and ninth innings, but came up one run short in the 4-3 loss.
 Ben Serie pitched a complete game for the Birds. Serie struck out 18 Pirates and gave up six hits, five walks and four runs.
Serie also led Luverne at the plate with two hits, one run and one RBI. He also tallied two stolen bases.
Derek Lundgren blasted a triple and scored one run. Gaige Nath also scored in the game.

Luverne 7, Atwater 1
 The Redbirds traveled north to Atwater Friday night and picked up a 7-1 victory over the Chuckers.
Lundgren scored first when Serie hit a line drive single in the first inning.
Luverne scored one more in the second inning when Ethan Beyer crossed home plate after Lundgren grounded out to the shortstop.
The Birds doubled their lead in the third inning.
Cade Wenninger hit a sacrifice fly that scored Serie before a ground ball hit by Beyer scored Jake Haugen.
Lundgren scored his second of three runs in the game during the sixth inning when Skyler Wenninger hit an RBI single.
A two-run home run in the top of the seventh inning by Lundgren also scored Charlie Reisch to extend the Redbird lead over the Chuckers to 7-0.
Atwater scored one run in the bottom of the seventh.
When neither team scored in the final two innings, Luverne left Atwater with a 7-1 victory.
Jake Haugen pitched a complete nine-inning game for the Redbirds.
Haugen gave up six hits and one run while striking out eleven batters.
At the plate, Lundgren scored three runs and added three RBIs off of two hits.
Reisch was three for four with one run scored.

Luverne 11, Kimball 4
 Luverne earned its second road win in two days when the Redbirds took down the Kimball Express 11-4 Saturday afternoon.
The Birds exploded for seven runs in the top of the first inning to set the tone for the game.
The first two batters of the game, Lundgren and Nath, each hit singles before Skyler Wenninger hit a three-run home run to take an early lead, 3-0.
Three batters later, Cade Wenninger hit a triple that scored Haugen, and the next batter, Beyer, hit a ground ball to score Cade Wenninger, bringing the Redbird lead to 5-0.
Beyer scored when Luverne player-manager Brooks Maurer singled. When Reisch stole home, the Birds had a solid 7-0 lead before the Express came to bat.
After scoring one more run in the top of the third, Luverne added two more in the fourth inning.
Lundgren and Nath both scored on a line drive single by Cade Wenninger.
Kimball scored its first run of the game in the fourth inning and would add one run in the sixth and two more in the eighth.
The Redbirds’ eleventh and final run of the contest came in the top of the sixth when a sacrifice fly to center by Cade Wenninger scored his brother, Skyler.
Luverne enjoyed a very balanced offensive effort against the Express.
Lundren, Skyler Wenninger, Haugen and Cade Wenninger all tallied three hits in the game, with Cade Wenninger adding four RBIs and Skyler Wenninger recording three RBIs.
Lundgren was on the mound for the first five innings for the Birds. He gave up four hits and one run while striking out four.
Cade Wenninger came in to pitch the final four innings. He offered four hits and three runs while striking out two and walking two.
