•The unexpected happened this week in that two Ford automobiles, stolen from Rock county owners, have been recovered, one at Valley Springs and the other at Worthington, but the practically new 1921 Chandler seven passenger touring car, abandoned Wednesday of last week near Magnolia, remains unclaimed.
One of the Ford cars recovered was owned by Henry Hass, of Vienna township, and was stolen Saturday evening, after it had been left standing opposite the Farmer’s National bank. It was missed at about nine o’clock in the evening, but it was not until about midnight that it was definitely ascertained that it had been stolen, for it was thought that one of the young people had taken the car to go to a dance. This car was recovered at Worthington the following day.

H-BC's Dwire named top female shooter in conference; earns berth to national event

Recent Hills-Beaver Creek graduate Journey Dwire never expected to be named the top female shooter in the Class 3A-Conference 1.
She was awarded a first-place medal from the Minnesota State High School Clay Target League Wednesday, June 22, during the trap shooting championships in Alexandria.
The six-year member of the team said she was shocked to receive the award.
“My main goal was to just improve every year,” she said. “I never really expected to receive the award as there are so many female shooters in the state. It was really an amazing experience and I am truly grateful.”
Dwire and her family frequently target practice at their acreage north of Beaver Creek. Her parents, Travis and Shannon Dwire helped her understand the importance of control and aim.
“Journey started out with a BB gun at age 6 and had fun shooting pop cans off a board,” Travis said. “She took her youth firearms safety training in the sixth grade and started with a small-bore rifle and some pistol. She started getting into shotgunning in eighth grade when H-BC started a trap team.”
Her parents also encouraged her to join the team in 2018.
“My love of trapshooting started when my dad asked me if I wanted to try it since I was already good with targets,” Dwire said. “I figured I had nothing to lose so I decided to give it a try. After my first year, I realized I loved it and wanted to continue.”
Over the five-week spring season, Dwire shot an average of 20.7 clays out of 25.
For her last year on the team, her dad was the team’s head coach.
“I believe that having my dad there made the sport easier,” she said.
“I always know that I have someone who supports me, is right behind me, and watching me as I grow in a sport I love so much.”
Trap shooting involves using a shotgun to shoot at a clay disk launched into the air.
Five shooters are at each launch site, and after each shot they rotate to a different shot point. Time between shots, although brief, allows shooters to become nervous, especially if a clay target is missed.
Dwire tells herself to be realistic in her approach to shooting.
“Between shots I try to remind myself I’m not there to shoot perfect. I am there to have fun and do what I enjoy. I try not to overthink it and tell myself that I do this for fun,” she said.
At the Class 3A championships last week, Dwire hit 91 out of 100 clays and tied for 11th place among the female varsity shooters.
Based on her regular season and championship performance, she’s been invited to compete in the USA Clay Target National Championships July 6-10 in Mason, Michigan.
“It is fun to watch how she grows from the perspective of the other coaches as well,” Travis said. “There is an excitement when each team member succeeds, but also as a father you enjoy watching your daughter do well and enjoy the sport and have fun.”

Area golfers end seasons at state tournament

Senior Tess Van Maanen traveled to Becker Tuesday and Wednesday, June 14 and 15, to compete at the state Class A golf meet for the third time in her high school golfing career.
She came away with a 25th-place finish under challenging course conditions.
“Pebble Creek Country Club plays very difficult,” said H-BC golf coach Dan Ellingson. “There is lots of water, hills and sand, along with very fast greens. The best players in the state need to play very well to score well.”
Van Maanen was tied for 28th place after Day 1 of the event with a score of 96. On Day 2 she ended with a 96 as well but was able to move up a few spots to come away with a total score of 192 and a 25th place finish.
“Tess played very well at state, placing in the top 30 percent,” Ellingson said. “It was a great golfing experience.”
Van Maanen also participated in the Monday evening banquet that recognizes the State Class A golfers for athletic and academic performance.
“She was able to put together a very successful career at H-BC,” Ellingson said. “Not only was Tess an All Conference and All State golfer this year, she also was part of the Academic All Conference and All State teams.”

For the Star Herald
Luverne sophomore Henry Hartquist competed at the State AA Golf Tournament at the Ridges at Sand Creek in Jordan June 14-15.
Hartquist shot a two-day total of 152 to finish in 12th place out of 85 golfers in the tournament. St. Croix Lutheran Academy’s Sam Udovich was crowned individual champ with a score of 142.
Hartquist started the tournament strong with an opening nine score of 35. He then posted a 42 on his back nine for an 18-hole total of 77. This placed him eighth overall headed into Round 2.
He shot a very consistent 38 and 37 on his two nines in Round 2 for a total of 75, according to Luverne boys’ golf coach John Sichmeller.
“Henry played some really good golf this week,” Sichmeller said. “He definitely proved that he has what it takes to compete in this tournament in the next couple of years, and I think this will motivate him even more to make it back here.”
Hartquist said he enjoyed the experience of playing at the state level of competition.
“State was an amazing experience,” he said. “I think I played fairly well, but I have some things I know I can improve on. The best part was my buddies coming along and cheering me on.”
Hartquist finished the season as the Big South Conference Individual Champion and the Section 3AA Individual Runner-Up.
