Faith family roots run 150 years deep for Bethlehem Lutheran

Isaiah 11:10 NIV
“10 In that day the Root of Jesse will stand as a banner for the peoples; the nations will rally to him, and his resting-place will be glorious.”
Jesus is the Root of Jesse, the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end. From him all things were created and came into being. This time of the year we celebrate Pentecost Sunday, and now Holy Trinity Sunday, where we witness the love of God coming to us through the Holy Spirit.
The root of a faith family is an important part of who we are as a community. Those gathered around each other as a family care for each other, offer help, love, and a way to share what we have received.
As a faith family, the roots at Bethlehem Lutheran in Hills are 150 years deep. Our community comes from long lines of people who have stood up for each other and continue to support each other by worshiping together, supporting different programs that provide for the needs of others, and doing what Jesus would do!
It is not enough to claim you are a Christian with words. You need to back those words up with action.
James 2:14-17 NIV “14 What good is it, my brothers, and sisters, if someone claims to have faith but has no deeds? Can such faith save them? 15 Suppose a brother or a sister is without clothes and daily food. 16 If one of you says to them, ‘Go in peace; keep warm and well fed,’ but does nothing about their physical needs, what good is it? 17 In the same way, faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead.”
As we gather for celebrations this summer, let us remember that we come from deep roots, the root of Jesse. Let that root spring up in us as hope eternal. Remember where you have come from, remember those who came before you and made life easier for you. Renew your commitment to your faith family, be there for others, support others and use your God-given gifts to the best of your ability. Rejoice that you have a place to call home where the love of God still thrives! Be fearless in your desire to make life better for those around you, and thank God every single day for all that you have; rejoice and celebrate all that you have been given!
Be the shining star for others. Follow the example of James and care for your brothers and sisters, whoever they may be!

Mayor Baustian runs for state rep, Kracht challenges Aaker for City Council

Luverne Mayor Pat Baustian is seeking election to the Minnesota House of Representatives.
He announced his candidacy for the District 21A seat after filing Tuesday, May 31, just before the 5 p.m. deadline.
Baustian is running on the DFL ticket, challenging Republican incumbent Joe Schomacker of Luverne in the November 2022 general election.
If elected, Mayor Baustian would be required to give up his elected position in Luverne in order to accept a seat in the House of Representatives.
He said he waited until the last minute to file because it took him that long to decide if he’d do it.
“I’ve had a ground swell of supporters in the entire District 21A encouraging me to run because of the lack of any accomplishments at the state level and knowing that I like to take on issues and get things done,” Baustian said.
No other DFL candidates filed, and Baustian’s 20-year background in government leadership would qualify him for a seat in the House of Representatives.
He’s been Luverne mayor for 12 years, now 2 ½ years into his current term, and he was previously elected to two four-year terms on the council.
Chief Master Sgt. Baustian retired in January 2020 from his 32-year career in the South Dakota Air National Guard where he was IT manager in the 114 Communications Flight.

Weber challenged for Senate seat
The Minnesota District 21 State Senate seat is open for election, and incumbent Bill Weber will face challenger Brad Hutchinson, Mountain Lake, also a Republican, in a race for that seat.

Race in Ward 2
In city of Luverne elections, incumbent Kevin Aaker will face challenger Merlin Kracht in a race for the Ward 2 seat on the Luverne City Council.
“I am running for City Council to address the needs of the people of Luverne, instead of the wants of city government.”
Kracht is a longtime Luverne businessman, operating his Mert’s Repair shop in the city’s industrial park.

No other contests
According to Rock County Auditor Ashley Kurtz, all city and county incumbent candidates have filed for re-election.
Ward 1 Luverne City Council member Caroline Thorson is running unopposed for election to another term.
Because of redistricting, all county commission seats are up for election. They are Gary Overgaard in District 1, Stan Williamson in District 2, Greg Burger in District 3, Sherri Thompson in District 4 and Jody Reisch in District 5.
The offices of Rock County Sheriff Evan Verbrugge and Rock County Attorney Jeff Haubrich are up for election this fall, and both have filed for re-election.
Jim Veldkamp filed for Soil and Water Supervisor District 5, and Josh Ossefoort filed for the SWCD 2 seat.
There is a second candidate filing period, Aug. 2-16, for all other cities, townships and school districts that hold elections in November.

Luverne celebrates 38th annual Buffalo Days

Large crowds gathered on the sidewalks and curbs of Luverne’s Main Street Saturday morning for the 38th Annual Buffalo Days Parade, which boasted more than 45 entries and more than enough candy to go around. The fun continued into the afternoon with the Buffalo Days Expo at the Courthouse Square, a change in recent years from the traditional Arts in the Park at the city park, which is less accessible for vendors and visitors. Happy smiles and brightly colored parade entries and expo vendors more than offset dark clouds and intermittent sprinkles that persisted through the Buffalo Days weekend. The only event affected by weather was Tales from the Graves, which moved indoors Sunday from the Maplewood Cemetery to the Downtown History Center, which may become the venue for future Tales, due to its accessibility and appropriate historic backdrop.
Intermittent sprinkles weren’t enough to dampen the festive atmosphere of Friday Night’s Classic Car Cruise-In, the official start to Luverne’s Buffalo Days Celebration weekend. More than 200 auto enthusiasts participated and hundreds more came downtown to appreciate the classic, collectible and unique automobiles and to enjoy live music, outdoor dining and other festivities.
