Patriots roll to win in Westbrook Friday

By John RittenhouseThe Hills-Beaver Creek boys raised their Red Rock Conference record to 6-3 with a convincing win in Westbrook Friday.The Patriots coasted to an 18-point lead in the first half and led by 20 points after three quarters before settling for a 62-52 victory over the Westbrook-Walnut Grove Chargers.H-BC dominated the game statistically and it showed in the first half, when it sported 21-8 and 39-21 leads at the opening quarter breaks.The Patriots led 52-32 heading into the fourth quarter when W-WG used a 20-10 scoring cushion to trim the final margin of victory to 10 points.H-BC, which made 48 percent of its field goals and outrebounded W-WG 37-24 in the game, received a 15-point, six-rebound, three-assist effort from Zach Wysong.Kale Wiertzema scored 14 points, grabbed eight rebounds and led the Patriots with seven assists.Tom LeBoutillier made seven of nine field goals and scored 14 points for the winners. SSC snaps five-game girls' streak

By John RittenhouseThe Hills-Beaver Creek girls had a five-game basketball winning streak snapped when they played Southwest Star Concept in Okabena Thursday.SSC raced to a 12-2 lead in the first quarter and fought off a late challenge by H-BC to upend the Patriots 54-41.The Patriots made a bid to erase SSC’s early advantage when they trimmed the difference to four points (28-24) at one stage of the third quarter. The Quasars, however, outscored H-BC 26-17 the rest of the way to win by 13."We were sluggish all night," said Patriot coach Tom Goehle. "They did a good job of being physical with us. We didn’t execute our offense very well because of their physical play."H-BC trimmed SSC’s lead to eight points (24-16) by halftime and trailed by six points (30-24) after three periods.SSC canned 12 of 12 free throws in the fourth quarter on the way to a 13-point win.Cassi Tilstra, who led the Patriots with five assists and four steals, netted 12 of her team-high 22 points in the fourth quarter.Erin Boeve netted 12 points for the Patriots. ATT Communications replacement tower hearing set for Feb. 18

County Commissioners meet Jan. 20

Law Library 9:00 AMRock County Courthouse January 20, 2004Chair Jarchow called the meeting to order with all Commissioners present. Motion by Hoime, seconded by Bakken, to approve the January 20, 2004 County Board agenda, declared carried on a voice vote. Motion by Wildung, seconded Boyenga, to approve the January 6, 2004 County Board minutes, declared carried on a voice vote. Motion by Boyenga, seconded by Wildung, to approve the following items on the consent agenda, declared carried on a voice vote. 1. FSA Contract with Luverne School District and Southwestern Mental Health Center to provide school mental health services effective 1-1-04 to 6-30-04. Rock County’s share of the contract is $10,055.2. FSA Contract with Hills-Beaver Creek School District and Southwestern Mental Health Center to provide school mental health services effective 1-1-04 to 6-30-04. Rock County’s share of the contract is $1,850. Note: By mutual agreement, the school mental health social worker position will not be initiated until next school year (September 04). 3. FSA Contract 10-2110-04 with Southwestern Mental Health Center to provide home based counseling services effective 1-1-04 to 6-30-04.
