SSC snaps five-game girls' streak

By John RittenhouseThe Hills-Beaver Creek girls had a five-game basketball winning streak snapped when they played Southwest Star Concept in Okabena Thursday.SSC raced to a 12-2 lead in the first quarter and fought off a late challenge by H-BC to upend the Patriots 54-41.The Patriots made a bid to erase SSC’s early advantage when they trimmed the difference to four points (28-24) at one stage of the third quarter. The Quasars, however, outscored H-BC 26-17 the rest of the way to win by 13."We were sluggish all night," said Patriot coach Tom Goehle. "They did a good job of being physical with us. We didn’t execute our offense very well because of their physical play."H-BC trimmed SSC’s lead to eight points (24-16) by halftime and trailed by six points (30-24) after three periods.SSC canned 12 of 12 free throws in the fourth quarter on the way to a 13-point win.Cassi Tilstra, who led the Patriots with five assists and four steals, netted 12 of her team-high 22 points in the fourth quarter.Erin Boeve netted 12 points for the Patriots. Brittney Rozeboom charted seven rebounds and three steals.H-BC was scheduled to play in Fulda Monday, but the game was postponed until Feb. 14.
