1935: Rock County now eligible for drought relief

The following appeared in The Rock County Herald on Feb. 22, 1935.

Rock County Now in Drought Relief Area

Farmers in Dire Need of Feed for Livestock Can Secure Emergency Feed Loans to Meet Situation
Rock county is now included in the emergency drought relief area in Minnesota, which means that farmers who happen to be in dire need of feed for livestock can secure emergency feed loans. Official notification to this effect was made yesterday by Harry Alle, of Worthington, federal seed loan field representative.
A central office for Rock county has been established. In the office of County Agent Willrett, with Geo. Dunbar, of Ash Creek, a chief clerk. Mr. Allen was in the city yesterday assisting in making arrangements for the establishing of his office, from which the feed loans will be issued. A county committee composed of A. A. Anderson, Frank Peschon, Wm. Jacobsen and C. J. Martin has been appointed to pass on the loans.
Applications for loans may be made at any time at the central office. The amount to be loaned will be at the rate of $3.00 per cow, $4.00 per horse, $1.00 per hog and 50 cents per sheep. These loans are issued on a per month basis.  The loans will be due and payable on November 1st this year. The rate of interest is 5½ percent.
Farmers and stockmen in nine additional Minnesota counties, including Rock, were this week placed on the list of those eligible to obtain emergency feed loans from a part of the emergency drought fund appropriated last year. The other counties are Kittson, Mahnomen, LeSeuer, Pennington, Rice, Polk, Brown and Dakota.
Such loans are being disbursed from a part of the emergency fund appropriated by congress and approved June 19th, 1934, and are obtained only through the emergency crop and feed loan offices, and not from any of the permanent lending agencies under the Farm Credit administration.
While the need for these feed loans is by no means widespread in Rock county, undoubtedly some farmers may have felt the effects of the drought to such an extent that the loans will prove of considerable help. Efforts to have Rock county included in the feed loan area have been in progress for some time, particularly  on account of the hail storm which swept the northern part of the county last summer, but no definite action was taken until the supplemental list of the above mentioned counties was approved.

Local photographs used in Sanford Luverne remodel

As work finishes on the Sanford Luverne Clinic remodeling project, 69 photographs will be hung as artwork throughout the building.
“When we started looking at plans to give the clinic a facelift, we realize that artwork is usually what your eye wants to go to — not just the carpet or wall color,” said senior director Tammy Loosbrock. “We wanted to give our patients and our staff some high-quality local prints to enjoy, not a generic photo or something they might see in any other space.”
Staff selected most of the photos from the Luverne Area Chamber photography contest and photos owned by the city of Luverne.
Jim Juhl with Myhre Studio in Luverne framed the pictures in non-glare glass.
The clinic’s examination rooms, procedure rooms, radiology, offices and other space are complete. The entrance and lobby are scheduled to be finished in coming weeks.
The clinic remains open.

•Luverne’s new airport manager is enjoying steady business since taking over the reins on May 1.
Ben Baum moved his business, Sierra Delta Aviation, LLC, from Custer, S.D., to Luverne when he assumed management and fixed base operation duties at Quentin Aanenson Field.
Since then, he and his wife, Lori, and their four boys, have been settling into their new home, new school and new life.

•A brand new billboard along Interstate 90 is giving Luverne a leaner, sharper image.
“It’s just beautiful,” said Sandra Dowie of the Luverne Convention and Visitors Bureau. “We’re trying to attract more tourists off the highway into Luverne.”
The bureau, which takes credit for the new billboard, is comprised of three hotel owners, three members from the business and nonprofit community, and one representative each from the city, chamber and Blue Mounds State Park.
The 14-by-48 billboard went up July 19 at a cost of $5,000 to replace the former Luverne billboard, which was more than eight years old. Money for the billboard was raised through the new lodging tax the city implemented last year. The new billboard is located about one-quarter mile west of the Luverne exit on the north side of the freeway. It has a simpler design with larger print and an extra-large photograph of the Blue Mounds State Park buffalo. The state park is featured on one side and the services Luverne offers are listed on the other side.

•The Luverne school board Tuesday night set Sept. 13 as the date to open bids for a computer for the school. …
Decision to call for bids for a used computer was made after a board study committee consisting of Erling Tofteland, D. M. Lippi and Elmer Piepgras made a recommendation that such a move be taken. Whether or not they will make the purchase depends upon the bids submitted, the board indicated in their discussions Tuesday night.
Supt. Harvey Eitreim said that plans are moving ahead for a state-wide computer set-up for schools. If a machine is purchased for Luverne, it would be used for training in the business education department, as well as for handling payroll, scheduling, making up report cards, and for classroom instruction in other fields of study.

•Earl Chizum and Ralph Kvaas have purchased the Chez Paree Café from the former owners, Pederson and Minnes, and have taken possession of the café which is located south on Highway 75.
The two young Luverne men plan to open the café at noon every day and operate until the early hours of the morning, featuring a complete menu of steaks and home baked pastries as well as a variety of sandwiches, short orders and lunches.
A filling station will be operated by Chitzum and Kvaas in connection with the café and later they plan to install a line of tires and auto accessories.

•The 8th annual commencement exercises of the schools of Rock county will be held on Tuesday evening, Aug. 23rd, at the consolidated school building at Magnolia, as ample quarters for the exercises are not available in this city.
At that time a class of sixty-three eighth grade graduates from semi-graded and rural schools of the county will be awarded their diplomas by County Supt. Edia A. Headley.
The class will be the largest that has been graduated in the history of the county, and the number is considered especially noteworthy as it does not include graduates from the high or graded schools of the county. Murray county, for instance, with practically twice the number of school districts to draw from, has only fifty-seven graduates this year.
