What did you give up for Lent?

(The following column was submitted to appear in the Star-Herald on March 30 during the season of Lent. A different column was inadvertently used, and the Star-Herald staff apologizes for the error. We would like to share the intended column with you readers now.)
Mardi Gras! Fat Tuesday! Parties and parades! About a month ago these grand events were in the news. On February 22, the church season of Lent began. This is generally considered a time of repentance, of being sorry for sins. So for many people, they want to get all the celebrating out of their system before “Ash Wednesday” hits.
The beautiful, somber Lenten season lasts about six weeks. During this time many Christians choose to “give up” something that they enjoy, such as a favorite food or pastime, so that they can devote more time and thought to Jesus.
Whether or not you give anything up for Lent, consider what Jesus has given up for you. Even though he is true God, Christ Jesus also became a man. He did this so that he could live the life that God wants us to live: a perfect, holy life. He spent just over thirty years on this earth, teaching people about God’s love and his plan of salvation, healing those who were sick or demon-possessed and training his disciples for future Gospel ministry. During his earthly life, Jesus experienced many things just like we do — hunger, pain, afflictions, sadness — yet he never sinned once, and he did not fully use his divine power, not even when it would have made his life easier.
As we approach Palm Sunday and the events of Holy Week, ponder all that our Savior went through. Jesus was welcomed as a King on that festive day, with children and adults waving palm branches and shouting: “Hosanna! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!” Yet just a few days later many in the crowds would turn on Jesus and cry out for his death by crucifixion. Even though he was totally innocent, our Savior allowed himself to be arrested, tried, and convicted for crimes he did not commit. He was severely beaten, mocked, and whipped/flogged. Then he gave up his very life when he was nailed to a Roman cross.
Jesus endured all this out of pure, selfless love — in your place. He lived a righteous life and died a humiliating death so that God would forgive all people — including you and me — all of our sins. He willingly gave up his life so that you and I could have life forever with him in heaven.
What’s more, Christ gave up his life for you but he didn’t stay dead. Throughout the Lenten season we look forward to Easter, when we celebrate Jesus’ awesome victory of rising bodily from the dead. That’s what makes all the sacrifices of Lent — including what Jesus gave up — so worth it. “Because I live, you also will live,” our resurrected Lord promised (John 14:19). Repent in Lent, for Easter is coming!
Yes, what an honor for us to watch and pray with our Savior during Lent and Holy Week. How much richer and joyous our celebration of Easter will be when we take time to see the depth of his sorrow and suffering for us and how it resolves itself in his triumph over sin and death.
May the Lord bless your Lenten journey as we focus on his cross, his sacrifice, his forgiveness, and his peace. Praise God that Jesus went through all of this for you!

More than 40 runners participate in Buffalo Days Run for a Cause

Saturday’s Buffalo Days Run for a Cause attracted more than 40 runners and raised thousands of dollars for the Luverne non-profit Carson’s Cause.
The 10K male winner was Matthew Hamersma with a time of 42:18 and the female winner was Natalie Bender with a 50:07.
The 5K male winner was Austin Winter with a time of 22:06, and Heather Johnson was first among female runners with a time of 27:57.
Levi Thielbar won the 1-mile race in 6:48 and 13-year-old Kinsely Comeau ran it in 8:55.
The Buffalo Days Run has for 20 years been organized by Sanford Luverne, which opted not to host it this year. So, Carson’s Cause volunteers picked it up as an opportunity to raise money for local brain health.
“We were pleased with the numbers for our first-time effort, and we’re very grateful for everyone’s support,” said Lori Sorenson, mother of Carson Ehde who died last fall from suicide.
She and Carson’s girlfriend, Gracie Rozeboom, channeled gifts and resources after his death into Carson’s Cause, a non-profit that supports efforts to improve dialogue around brain health.
Saturday morning’s Buffalo Days 5K, 10K and 1-mile run also had hiking and biking options for people to join for the Carson’s Cause fundraiser.
As of press time, organizers were still selling race T-shirts and accepting donations for Carson’s Cause, but they estimated fundraising results at nearly $10,000.
They have committed to also hosting next year’s Buffalo Days Run for a Cause. More information about the non-profit is at luvacf.org/carsonrsquos-cause.

Lady Pates Abby Olson places 13th in Section 3A golf

Hills-Beaver Creek High School freshman Abby Olson competed in the Minnesota Section 3A Girls’ Golf Tournament Tuesday, May, 30, in Worthington.
Olson shot a season-low 18-hole score of 112 on Tuesday, the second day of the tournament for the Patriots.
On Day 1, May 24, she shot a 114 to advance to Day 2 play.
Olson had a two-day total score of 226, giving her 13th place overall within the section.
Head coach Dan Ellingson said Olson’s section performance speaks well of her future high school golf career.
“Abby is looking forward to next year as she continually improved during the season,” he said.
Ellingson said Olson was the Patriots’ lone Red Rock All-Conference player this year.
This was Olson’s last meet for the year, having missed the top cutoff placement to advance in the tournament.

2023 Buffalo Days youth baseball tournament attracts 65 youth teams

The Luverne Baseball Association (LBA) hosted its 2023 Buffalo Days Baseball Tournament June 2-4 with 37 local and regional teams competing on multiple fields in Luverne.
Age brackets in the tournament were 9U, 10U, 11U, 12U, 13U, 14U and Jr. Legion (16U).
The tournament offers a fun and competitive environment for kids and families while bringing many visitors to the community, according to tournament director Barry Shelton.
“The tournament has been going on for over 20 years, but the LBA moved it to Buffalo Days in 2015 to coincide with the Buffalo Days activities and events,” he said.
Shelton gave a special nod to local families and volunteers for their efforts.
“It would not be possible to run the tournament as smoothly as they do,” he said.
“There were around 100 volunteers helping prep the fields, coaching, organizing activities and selling concessions during the games.”
The Luverne 14U team took first place in the weekend tournament, and two Luverne teams, 12U and 13U, finished in second place.

LHS baseball team wins two big games in sections

The Luverne baseball team won two big games in the past week to advance to the Section 3AA Championship game.
The Cardinals beat Paynesville 2-1 on May 30 and Fairmont 2-1 on June 3 at Legion Field in Marshall.
Luverne will return to Marshall Thursday to take on the winner of the elimination bracket between Fairmont and Paynesville. Game time is 5 p.m.

LHS 2, Paynesville 1
The Cardinals defeated Paynesville 2-1 in Section 3AA play Tuesday, May 30, at Legion Field in Marshall.
Luverne scored first in the bottom of the first inning when Conner Connell singled on a fly ball to center field to score Carter Sehr from third base.
LHS added one more run in the sixth inning when Elliot Domagala scored on an Alex Schlosser single.
Going into the seventh inning, Luverne had a 2-0 lead with one inning to play.
Paynesville was able to add one run in the top of the seventh only to come up one run short.
The Cardinals left six players on base and committed three errors in the game.
Connell pitched a full game, going seven innings, allowing one run on four hits, and striking out seven batters.

LHS 2, Fairmont 1
Luverne snatched a 2-1 victory from Fairmont in Section 3AA semifinal play Saturday, June 3, in Marshall.
With the game tied 1-1 in the bottom of the seventh inning, Luverne had one out, and Fairmont intentionally walked Sehr.
Riley Sneller came to the plate and got behind in the count, looking at two strikes.
Sneller then fouled two balls to stay alive in the count.
With a crack of the bat Sneller singled on a ground ball to left field, scoring Schlosser for the winning run.
The dugout emptied as the Cardinals ran to first base to celebrate their victory.
“It has been awesome to watch this team come together throughout the course of our season,” head coach Phil Paquette said.
The Cardinals did not commit one error in the game  and only allowed six hits by Fairmont.
Fairmont also left 10 runners on base in the game, a testament to the defensive play by Luverne and the pitchers being able to shut down several batters.
DeBoer took the mound for LHS, pitching 3 1/3 innings, allowing zero runs on four hits.
Connell came in off the bench to relieve DeBoer, going 3 2/3 innings, giving up one run on two hits, and striking out eight batters.
“In the post season we have been able to get outstanding pitching and solid defensive play,” Paquette said.
“At the plate and on base we have been able to produce just enough runs against good pitching, and we’ll need to continue this type of play to win in big games.”
Paquette is looking forward to a big crowd and great playoff atmosphere at the Section 3AA Championship on Thursday night.
