Luverne cross country teams crown two new champions

The Luverne cross country team participated in the Metcalf Invitational at Mountain Lake Golf Course Friday, Sept. 1.

Luverne was one of 15 teams at the event.

In the varsity and junior varsity events, the Cardinals had 11 runners place in the Top 15.

Junior Owen Janiszeski and senior Jenna DeBates each placed first as individual champions in the 5,000 meter.

“I thought we did a nice job of getting out, competing and challenging ourselves to get better,” head coach Pete Janiszeski said. “We showed a lot of growth from last week in Beresford, and the kids raced with a lot of confidence.”

In team results, Luverne took first place in the boys’ varsity 5,000 meter and the girls’ junior varsity 4,000 meter events.

In the boys’ varsity 5,000 meter, Luverne took first place in the team competition.

Luverne junior Owen Janiszeski took first place and was the individual champion with a time of 16:01.29.

Senior Ryan Fick finished in fourth place at 16:36.07.

Sage Viessman, a junior, finished in 15th with a time of 17:28.42.

Junior Leif Ingebretsen finished in 22nd at 17:57.73.

Freshman Marcus Papik finished at 23rd with a time of 18:03.32.

Zach Terrio, a senior, finished in 33rd at 18:38.94.

Junior Dylan Ommen rounded out the Luverne runners in 46th with a time of 19:20.09.

In the girls’ varsity 5,000 meter, Luverne had two runners and did not place as a team.

Senior Jenna DeBates placed first in the race and was the individual champion with a run of 18:24.67.

Freshman Khloe Visker finished in ninth place with a time of 21:52. 82.

In the boys’ junior varsity 4,000 meter, Luverne had two runners in the event.

Junior Eli McLandon finished in fifth place with a time of 16:34.01 and sophomore Zander Fountain place 24th at 21:09.11.

In the girls’ junior varsity 4,000 meter, the Luverne team place first in the event.

Freshman Reinha John placed second with a time of 20:01.82.

Mariah Knorr, a freshman, placed third at 20:27.46.

Senior Kayla Bloemendaal placed fifth with a time of 21:08.67.

Freshman Olivia Lund finished in sixth place at 21:33.55

Junior Jaelyn Arp finished in seventh place with a time of 21:45.41.

Senior Brynn Boyenga placed 11th with a time of 22:41.36.

Andrea Luitjens, a junior, placed 17th with a time of 24:49.32.

Freshman Anna Reisdorfer placed 23rd with a time of 29:45.12.

Sophomore Maddy Schepel placed 24th with a time of 30:54.68.

The LHS cross country team will host a multi-team event Saturday, Sept. 9.
