LHS football team wins home opener vs. Trojans

The Luverne football team faced off against Worthington Thursday, Aug. 31, at home.

The Cardinals beat the Trojans 25-20, holding off a second half surge by Worthington.

In the first quarter, senior Elliot Domagala turned a 15-yard run into Luverne’s first six points.

Senior Patrick Kroski missed the extra point field goal to keep the lead to six.

In the second quarter, junior Marcos Diaz scored on a 12-yard punt return deep in Worthington’s zone to make the score Luverne 12, Worthington 0.

The Cardinals failed to score on a two-point conversion play.

Worthington got on the board with a 70-yard pass and failed the two-point conversion, cutting the lead to 12-6 in favor of the Cardinals.

Domagala scored his second touchdown on a two-yard run late in the first half.

Luverne failed again on a two-point conversion, and the Cardinals led 18-6 going into the second half.

Senior Sam Rock rumbled into the end zone on a seven-yard run, extending the Cardinals’ lead to 24-6.

Kroski was able to kick the extra point, and Luverne took a 25-6 cushion into the fourth quarter.

Worthington mounted a scoring drive toward the middle of the fourth quarter with a 10-yard touchdown but failed the two-point conversion, cutting the score to 25-12.

Luverne turned the ball over on downs and Worthington was able to score again on a 25-yard pass, beating the Cardinals deep in the endzone.

The Trojans scored on a two-point conversion run pulling to within five points of the Cardinals.

Even though the Cardinals were unable to score late in the fourth quarter, they toughened their defense, sacking the Trojans’ quarterback to end the game at 25-20 for the win.
