•Rick White has been at home on Minnesota’s prairies for much of his life. As an employee of Minnesota’s state park system, he and his wife, Rhonda, have grown accustomed to beautiful scenery and living close to nature.
Now the Whites, originally from Wisconsin, are making their home on the grounds of Blue Mounds State Park where Rick will assume some managerial duties there and will remain the manager at Split Rock Creek State Park.
White has worked with six other state parks in Minnesota over the past 18 years, including Afton, Carley, Split Rock Lighthouse near the North Shore, Beaver Creek Valley and, for the past five years, at Split Rock Creek State Park near Ihlen.

•The sound of the tornado warning siren here Monday night sent many Luverne residents scurrying to their basements, or outside to see if they see the storm approaching.
Many didn’t hear the siren, but a good share of those who didn’t had already been alerted to the danger when weather warnings interrupted their television watching.
The Sioux Falls Weather Bureau had issued a tornado watch as early as 4 p.m. Monday. Word of the alert was received at the county radio dispatcher’s office about that time. About 11 p.m. the alert was changed to a severe thunderstorm and tornado warning. The storm was moving from southwest to northeast at about 35 miles per hour.
Funnel clouds were reported near Valley Springs, north of Beaver Creek, and west of Kanaranzi. None touched down, however, and when the storm had blown over, there was little damage or no damage, either by wind or hail, reported.

•Poultry raisers are in a position to relieve the meat shortage right now and in the next few weeks, and at the same time save themselves some money, according to Cora Cooke, extension poultry specialist at the University of Minnesota.
This potential source of ready meat exists in all poultry flocks in the hens that have already quit laying for the summer. They represent only extra cost to the owner since the feed they will eat cannot be expected to bring any return in eggs until well toward Christmas. They are also likely to bring more now than they will later. Another good reason for shipping them promptly is that their removal from the flock is likely to boost egg production on the part of the hens that remain.
