•Higher education is coming to Luverne for the first time.
Minnesota West Community and Technical College President Dr. Ron Wood said the system intends to start a “storefront” operation out of the former Luverne Community Hospital.

•Business at the Worthington Army recruiting office picked up “200 percent” Thursday, the day after American troops began bombing Iraq.
Army Lt. Col. Ronald Zychowski said he saw increases in the number of telephone and walk-in inquiries in recruiting offices within hours of the first attack. Zychowski oversees recruiting offices in four states.
He attributed the added interest in signing up to patriotism.
50 years ago (1966)
•The long awaited decision as to which of three southwestern Minnesota cities, Luverne, Pipestone or Slayton, would get the vocational-technical school ended Monday with Pipestone getting the nod from the State Board of Education.
The decision was unanimous but the hearing held in St. Paul was a mere formality inasmuch as the letter announcing the decision was dated four days earlier.
75 years ago (1941)
•The Luverne fire department received one of its most unusual calls about 6:30 p.m. Tuesday when it was summoned to extinguish a truck load of burning onions. …
Chief Larson reported that some of the sacks of onions had fallen from their pile and knocked over a kerosene stove which was used to heat the interior of the enclosed truck. The flames spread quickly and when the doors of the truck were opened, the interior was found to be a veritable blazing inferno.
100 years ago (1916)
•Every farmer in Rock county is asked to make a careful search of his own premises, particularly of the barns, sheds, hay and straw stacks, groves and ravines to aid in finding County Auditor John Kelley, who disappeared from his home Tuesday afternoon. Such action will be of great aid in trying to locate the missing man.
