Public hearing set for review of county redistricting maps

Rock County residents have until April 19 to comment on the new redistricting maps proposed for the five county commissioner districts.
The public hearing is scheduled for 9 a.m. Tuesday, April 19, in the Herreid Board Room at the Rock County Courthouse in Luverne.
Deadline is 5 p.m. Friday, April 15, at the county administrator’s office for anyone wanting to submit alternative redistricting maps for the hearing.
Redistricting is based on the 2020 census that put Rock County’s population at 9,704 people. Because the city of Luverne changed precinct boundaries due to the population shifts, the county also had to shift commissioner district boundaries.
Commissioners received their first look at the new district maps at their April 5 meeting.
“Each commissioner’s district, in a perfect world, would represent 20 percent or 1,941,” said County Administrator Kyle Oldre. “We do have a range of 10 percent around that number, with a high of 2,134 people to a low of 1,746 is what you can represent.”
The largest shift occurs in Kanaranzi Township, which now becomes a part of District 1 to meet the required population range.
Slight changes occur within District 5, which loses residents on Cashin Drive to District 3.
“They didn’t drastically change,” Oldre said.
If approved, the new district lines would be in effect for this fall’s election.
Population by district will then be:
•District 1, 1,884.
•District 2, 1,999.
•District 3, 2,098.
•District 4, 1,763.
•District 5, 1,960.
Each district will elect a commissioner to either a two- or four-year term.
Up for re-election to four-year terms are Stan Williamson (District 2) and Sherri Thompson (District 4.)
Up for election to two-year terms are Gary Overgaard (District 1), Greg Burger (District 3) and Jody Reisch (District 5.)
Copies of the proposed county redistricting map are available on the county’s website, www.co.rock.mn.us

Luverne band, Beautiful Kingdom, featured on 'Postcards' April 7

On Thursday, April 7, Pioneer PBS will release a new “Postcards” series that features Minnesota artists, including the Luverne-based band, Beautiful Kingdom.
The three-piece band, Beautiful Kingdom, features Matthew Stensland-Bos of Luverne, Nadia Sessen, originally of Montreal, Quebec, and Tyler Bryce, originally of California.
They have since played all over the area, including as a headliner at Levitt Shell in Sioux Falls, and are working on their full debut album.
For the Postcards feature, Pioneer PBS film crews recorded and interviewed the musicians in the home of Matthew’s parents, Doug Bos and Lynette Stensland, west of Luverne on County Road 5.
“It was really neat,” Bos said. “Matthew likes the acoustics in our dining room.”
Pioneer PBS promotes the April 7 airing with a description of the band. “Each of these singer-songwriters was creating music on their own for nearly a decade before hearing about each other,” the promo says.
Beautiful Kingdom formed in 2019 after years of talking and dreaming about creating a band together, according to Stensland-Bos.
“This band is not only a personal dream fulfilled for each of us, but part of a larger vision for what music and the world can be,” he said Tuesday.
The band’s full songs are available to listen on the usual streaming platforms, such as Spotify, YouTube, Apple Music.
Samples of the singles releases are available on the band’s website, beautiful-kingdom.com, which also features several videos and images at the acreage where Stensland-Bos grew up.
When asked about the meaning of their name, Sessen replied, “We’d like to bring heaven on to earth. We’d like to make it the most beautiful place possible.”
The Postcards stories will be available for online viewing starting at noon through the station’s website: www.pioneer.org/postcards and YouTube Channel.
The program will be aired over the Pioneer PBS broadcast network on April 7 at 7 p.m.
Thursday’s series will also feature multimedia Indigenous Inkpa Mani and Renville author Patricia Buschette.
The next local performance of Beautiful Kingdom will be Friday, June 3, at Take 16 during Buffalo Days weekend in Luverne.

Luverne children's author releases two more children's books

Local children’s author Kathie Hendricks has had two more books published, “A Day at the Beach” and “My Friend Andee.”
The 8- and 11-year-old characters, Bean and Tommy, are excited to go to the beach and wonder if they’ll see a shark.
Hendricks said one part of the story recreates a mishap in 2015 when her grown children helped her escape the pull of crashing waves on a California beach.
The other book follows the adventures of Bean’s imaginary friend, Andee, who is based on an imaginary friend that Hendrick’s daughter spoke of in childhood.
“When we moved to Luverne, Andee moved to New York City,” Hendricks recalled about 4-year-old Stephanie.
Her latest releases join four other books already on the market.
“Please Don’t Eat the Cupcakes” and “Backyard Hockey” were published in February of 2021.
“Here Come the Leprechauns” was released just ahead of St. Patrick’s Day in 2019, and her first book, “Walleyes and Watermelon: The Story of Summer at the Lake,” came out in January 2019.
Hendricks, a licensed in-home child care provider, said she had long dreamed of writing a children’s book, but it wasn’t until she had back surgery in 2017 that she found the time and motivation to do it.
By the end of her 10-week recuperation, Hendricks had written nine more children’s books, all neatly recorded in a stack of manuscripts ready to share with her publisher.
“Once I get an idea in my head, it doesn’t take very long to write,” she said. “It’s not a novel; children’s books are 20 pages or less.”
There are four more books from those original manuscripts awaiting publication.
She publishes under the pen name “Kate Henry” through Christian Faith Publishing in Meadville, Pennsylvania.
Her books are available at Barnes and Noble, Amazon, and in bookstores.
