Luverne takes second in subsection speech

Fourteen students will represent Luverne High School Saturday at the Minnesota High School League Section 3A speech championship.
The students qualified for the section tournament by placing in the Top 6 in their respective categories in the March 29 subsection competition in Adrian.
As a team, Luverne placed second.
Luverne students who placed at the subsection competition include:
•Extemporaneous speaking: Chance Tunnissen, first; Parker Carbonneau, second; Zander Carbonneau, third.
•Humorous: Luke Thorson, third.
•Creative expression: Brianna Kinsinger, second.
•Poetry: Mia Wenzel, fourth.
•Discussion: Burke Johnson, third; Maddy Schepel, sixth.
•Great speeches: Rylee Anderson, first; Nora Louwagie, second; Michelle Arevalo, third.
•Informative speaking: Jessika Tunnissen, second; Lizzy Mulder, fifth.
•Original oratory: Roselynn Hartshorn, sixth.
Subsection medalists received two awards at the March 29 event in Adrian.
“Because the organizers had not received the medals in time, they made paper plate medals so that the students had something to receive on the night of the competition," said Luverne coach Caroline Thorson. “However, the medals ended up coming in that day from the MSHSL, so the kids got both.”
For Saturday’s section tournament, Luverne is the reigning Section 3A champion.
At the section meet, the top three finishers in each of the 13 speech categories move on to compete in the state speech tournament slated for April 22-23 in Apple Valley.

Luverne takes decisive win in softball opener

The Luverne Cardinals softball team open the season Monday afternoon against Adrian-Ellsworth, defeating the visitors 15-0 in four innings.
The Cardinals scored five runs in the first inning with singles from Tori Serie and Payton Behr.
Luverne racked up three more runs in the second inning with a double from Carly Olson, scoring two runs, and a single from Belle Schmidt to score the third run, sending the Cardinals up to an 8-0 lead.
Two more runs scored in the third inning off no hits.
Finishing off the fourth and final inning, the Cardinals scored five runs off a single from Tori Serie and a two-run single from Anika Boll.
Defensively most of the work was done from the mound, and the Cardinals did not commit any errors.
Adrian-Ellsworth’s defense was charged with two errors in the four innings.
The LHS pitchers combined to throw the shut-out. Gracie Nath started on the mound for the Cardinals and pitched three innings, giving up no hits, no runs and walking no batters to get the victory for the Cardinals.
Nath struck out eight of the nine batters she faced. Ella Reisdorfer came in and threw one inning for the Cardinals in her varsity debut. She faced four batters and allowed one hit and no runs.
Leah Kruse took the loss for the Adrian-Ellsworth squad, pitching 3 1/3 innings, allowing five hits, three strike-outs, 10 walks and 11 runs. Kaysie Lenz threw the final two-thirds inning for Adrian-Ellsworth, allowing four runs, one hit and two walks. Kruse had the only hit for Adrian-Ellsworth.
Luverne is set to face the Edgerton Dutchmen at 4:30 p.m. Friday, April 8, at home.

Can You Believe Jesus?

If someone told you that he could leap over a building or a skyscraper in a single bound, that he could run a marathon in under 2 1/2 hours, or that he could do 200 pushups in a row, you would probably have good reason to be skeptical of that person’s claims. These aren’t things people can normally do! But if that person then took you to a building and leaped over it in a single bound, you’d probably say, “Wow! Okay. You don’t have to do the marathon or the pushups. I believe you because you are able to do that one thing.”
The resurrection of our Lord Jesus at Easter is the one thing that proves to us Jesus is the Son of God. And if he is the Son of God, you can also believe what he says. Jesus once said: “Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up again.” John 2:19
The temple he was talking about here was not the temple made with stones in Jerusalem. The temple was his own body. After his arrest, an illegal trial, being unjustly accused, and suffering great pain at the hands of his enemies, Christ Jesus, though totally innocent of any crimes, was put to death on a Roman cross on Good Friday. But then, three days later, on that first Easter Sunday morning when Jesus was not found dead and buried in the tomb, but alive — risen from the dead — he demonstrated that his Word is true. He fulfilled what he said. For that reason, you can believe all of the other incredible claims Jesus made.
This means you can also trust God’s Word when Jesus says your biggest problem is sin. It’s not your finances or your personal relationships; rather, it is that you have broken God’s Law. But you can also believe and rejoice in Jesus’ other promises to you, such as when he says, “I have forgiven all of your sins. I paid for them all on the cross!”
Yes, Christ even took up our folly and shame. He made himself an easy prey for an unseen enemy who couldn’t resist falling on him in such a state of foolishness and weakness.
“Even when you were dead in your trespasses ... God made you alive with Christ by forgiving us all our trespasses. God erased the record of our debt brought against us by his legal demands. … He took it away by nailing it to the cross. After disarming the rulers and authorities (the devil and all his rebellious spirits), he made a public display of them by triumphing over them in Christ.” Col 2:13-15
In light of his vacant tomb — for Jesus is risen! — how blessed we are to be called to share in his divine foolishness!
“For the word of the cross is folly to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God.” 1 Cor 1:18
And therefore you and I can also believe his words when he says, “One day I am going to send my angels to lift you up and bring you to be with me in heaven.”
Please join us at God’s House for Lenten worship and a joyful celebration of Christ’s resurrection from the dead. Jesus is risen indeed! Alleluia!
