•The Luverne School District had more revenue than expenses this year, resulting in a year-end balance of just over $100,000.
The mild winter was one reason the district’s general fund is $57,400 in the black.
The transportation fund has nearly $80,000 because the district has delayed purchasing a new bus, and the food service fund is $21,000 ahead because more students are eating at school.
The Community Education fund ended the year $37,000 in the red and may be an area for review at future board meetings.

Patriots girls', boys' golf teams open conference play in Fulda, Westbrook

The Hills-Beaver Creek golf teams competed in their first Red Rock Conference meets of the year Thursday when the girls traveled to Westbrook and the boys competed in Fulda.
The girls’ team was incomplete, but Tess VanMaanen placed eighth overall with an 18-hole score of 96.
H-BC senior Danette Leenderts shot a 110. Brielle Vis from Southwest Christian is the girls’ leader after the first conference meet with a score of 90.
“It went well for both teams,” said coach Dan Ellingson. “Tess and Danette shot season lows for 18 holes on the girls’ side in cool, windy conditions.”
Senior Jacob Axness led the way for the Patriots by shooting an 18-hole score of 91. This score was good enough to place him in the Top 5 of the conference.
The next four Patriots were seniors Austin Allen (95), Ethan Kruger (98), Dallas Page (103) and Daniel Martinyuk (106).
As a team the Patriot boys are currently in third place with a score of 387. Adrian/Ellsworth leads the way with a score of 361.
Ellingson said he was pleased with how the boys did as a team Thursday.
“The boys shot their season low team score,” he said. “Jacob also shot his season low to receive a medal, fifth place individually. The boys played through two lightning delays in Fulda.”
Sawyer Drent from HLOF/WWG led all scorers with a score of 82.
The next conference meet for both girls and boys will be Wednesday. The girls will travel to Sanborn while the boys’ teams will golf in Slayton.

Luverne boys' tennis team wins twice more, moves to 9-1

There were two more opponents and two more wins for the Luverne High School boys’ tennis team this week.
The victory in Worthington on April 29 was a close-as-can-be 4-3 win, and by contrast, Luverne’s win in Fairmont on Monday was a 7-0 sweep of the host Cardinals.
Luverne, now 9-1, was scheduled to play in St. James on Tuesday after this edition of the Star Herald went to press.
LHS is scheduled to host Redwood Valley today (Thursday), Vermillion, South Dakota, on Monday, and Pipestone Area next Thursday, May 12.

LHS 4, Worthington 3
“It was quite a match!”
That’s how Luverne head coach Lucas Larson summarized his Cardinals’ 4-3 victory over the Worthington Trojans on Thursday, April 29, in Worthington.
“We swept the singles matches, and that’s what won it for us,” Larson said.
“Blake (Frahm at No. 3 singles) and Ethan (Nath at No. 4 singles) really won that meet for us.”
He said the victory over the Trojans was especially satisfying because WHS is one of the stronger teams in the Big South Conference this season.
“It was a nice win for our team,” Larson said. “Winning the conference title is a big goal for us this year.”
Pierce Cunningham defeated Alec Langerud at No. 1 singles 6-0, 6-0.
At No. 2 singles, Griffen Jarchow was victorious over Ian Barber 6-0, 6-1.
Blake Frahm won over Ezra Bonnett 6-4, 6-3 in a close match at No. 3 singles, while Ethan Nath defeated David Sternke 6-4, 6-2 at No. 4 singles.
The Trojans won all three doubles matches.
At No. 1 doubles, Tyson Henkels and Quentin Burns defeated Chance Tunnissen and Logan Ommen of LHS in a close match 6-3, 3-6, 7-5.
Kyle Ferguson and Jase Arp lost to Levi Kuhl and Jacob Ahrenstorff 6-2, 6-2 at No. 2 doubles.
At No. 3 doubles, Matthew Becker and Steven Adams bested Luke Bosch and Levi Thielbar 6-1, 6-4.

Luverne 7, Fairmont 0
The Luverne Cardinals made quick work of their meet in Fairmont Monday, defeating the hosts 7-0.

At No. 2 doubles, Ferguson and Arp were victorious over Oliver Thedens and Simone Castro 6-2, 6-1.

LHS golf teams play to mixed results

The Luverne High School boys’ and girls’ golf teams played with mixed results over the past week that included two rounds of conference play and dual wins in Pipestone.
The Cardinal boys and girls will be back in action Tuesday versus Southwest Christian at home and then will finish off the week at the Fairmont Invitational on Saturday.

Big Southwest Division Meet Round 1
The Luverne boys’ and girls’ golf teams competed in their first of four conference meets of the season on Thursday, April 28.
The boys’ team competed in Redwood Falls, while the girls’ team played in Luverne.
The boys’ team started off conference play with a strong showing as they shot a team score of 152, and they tied Marshall for first place in the six-team event.
“152 is about as low of a score as I can remember our team shooting since I have been coaching,” said Luverne boys’ golf coach John Sichmeller.
The Cardinals were paced by sophomore Henry Hartquist with an even par round of 35, which tied him for meet medalist with Luke Ehlers from Marshall.
“I was really proud of how Henry played today. He played smart the entire round and put himself in good positions off the tee,” Sichmeller said.
“He is one of the longest hitters out there, but it was good to see him hitting some irons off the tee and playing to the middle of the greens instead of pin hunting all the time. He had a pretty stress-free round.”
Brady Bork finished in fourth place overall with a solid round of 37. Tyler Arends shot a 39 to tie for fifth overall, and Owen Sudenga rounded out the team scoring for the Cardinals with a score of 41. Levi Gonnerman shot a 45 and Colin Schoeneman a 51 for Luverne.
The Cardinal girls finished in fourth place after shooting a team score of 212 as they hosted Round 1 of conference play. Redwood Valley took first place with a team score of 183.
Cheyenne Schutz and Morgan Gonnerman led the Cardinals by shooting a pair of 51s, which placed them each in a tie for 10th place individually.
Lauren Hansen shot a 54, and Jocelynn Mann and Perceyis Trierweiler each shot a 56 to round out the team scoring for the Cardinals. Mallory Nelson also carded a 59 for Luverne.
Mila Jenniges shot a 40 to earn individual medalist honors at the meet.

Luverne vs. Pipestone
The Cardinal boys’ and girls’ golf teams hosted a dual versus Pipestone on Friday, April 30. On a cold and windy day, the Cardinal boys came out on top with a score of 169-183.
The Pipestone girls fielded an incomplete team, and the Cardinal girls recorded a team score of 204.
Gonnerman was the top scorer in the meet with a 48. Schutz shot a 49, Hansen shot a 50, and Trierweiler rounded out the team scoring for the Cardinals with a 57.
Mann (58), Nelson (66), and Olivia Huisman (69) also participated for the Cardinals.
Hartquist was the meet medalist on the boys’ side after a round of 39. Bork and Sudenga contributed a pair of 43s for the Cardinals, and Schoeneman rounded out the team scoring with a round of 44.
Also competing for Luverne were Levi Gonnerman (45) and Tyler Arends (48).

Big Southwest Division Meet Round 2
The Luverne golf teams competed in the second round of Big Southwest Conference play on Monday, May 2.
The Cardinal boys traveled to Windom for the event while the Cardinal girls played in Marshall.
The Luverne boys’ team fired a 171 which placed them fourth of the six teams competing. Marshall led the field with a team score of 158.
Hartquist continued his solid play for the Cardinals as he tied for third individually at the meet with a score of 39.
Bork tied for seventh overall after shooting a score of 41. Sudenga shot a 45 and Gonnerman shot a 46 to contribute to the team scoring. Arends shot a 47 and Schoeneman shot a 52.
The Luverne girls placed fourth out of the four teams competing Monday after shooting a team score of 221. Redwood Valley won the event with a team score of 176.
Mann led the Cardinals in scoring at the meet after shooting a round of 50 which tied her for eighth place overall.
“We didn’t play very well overall, but it was good to see Jocelynn have her best round and lead the team in scoring,” said Luverne girls’ coach Chris Nowatzki.
Also contributing to the Luverne scoring were Hansen (52), Trierweiler (58) and Schutz (61). Gonnerman shot a 62 and Nelson shot a 63 at the meet.

Cardinals place first and second in Worthington, gear up for True Team

The Luverne High School track teams had a successful outing in Worthington on April 28 where the girls’ team took first place, and the boys were second.
The Cardinals are only a week away from the True Team Section meet and a hopeful return to state.
True team rules have each team with two competitors in each event and one relay team. Every entrant scores points.
With 12 teams participating this year, a first-place finish would be worth 24 points down to one point for a last-place finish.
Relays are worth three times the number of teams participating, so a first-place relay win is worth 36 points.
“This year more than ever before we have had kids willing to step up, get out of their comfort zone and try different events,” said coach Pete Janiszeski.
“It is important to fill every event with two competitors, because it can come down to a handful of points, and you don’t want to score a zero in any event.”
He said Southwest Minnesota Christian-Ellsworth (SWMC-EHS) and Canby-Minneota will likely be top competitors for the girls.
On the boys’ side, SWMC-EHS and Redwood Falls will be the most likely competition for first place. Only the top team gets the automatic entry into the state meet.
There are four wild card teams that also get in, determined by a virtual meet using the times from each section to determine the next four highest-scoring teams.

Worthington Invitational
It was another cold and windy day at the Worthington Invite on April 28; however, the girls took home first place, and the boys were second behind Worthington in the team competition.
The 4-by-800-meter relay team of Tiana Lais, Cassi Chesley, Jenna DeBates and Tenley Nelson finished first (10:17.90).
Jocelyn and Jadyn Hart finished first and second in the shot put with throws of 36-11 1/2 and 36-2 3/4 respectively. Jadyn Hart finished first as well in the discus 112-8.
The 4-by-400-meter relay of Lais, Sarah Stegenga, Debates and Nelson finished second (4:21.60). DeBates (2:32.79) and Cassi Chesley (2:37.70) placed second and third in the 800-meter-run.
Nelson had a second in the 1,600-meter run (5:31.30). Elizabeth Wagner (49.91) and Kendra Thorson (54.98) were second and third in the 300-meter hurdles.
Mia Wenzel placed second in the high jump at 4-10.
For the Cardinal boys, Ashton Sandbulte had another first place finish in the 100-meter-dash (11.14).
Eli Radtke won the pole vault (12-0). He raised the bar for an attempt at a personal record 13-9 but came up short.
Sandbulte and Radtke teamed up with Lucky Dara and Zach Terrio for first-place finishes in both the 4-by-100-meter relay (45.56) and the 4-by-200-meter relay (1:36.24).
Jordan Friedrichsen was second in the shot put (45-4 1/2).
Owen Janiszeski finished second in the 800-meter-run with a personal record of 2:10.05.
