Youth wrestling club starts in Hills

Jamie Terry wants children in the Hills-Beaver Creek-Steen areas to experience wrestling this winter.
The Hills’ Aces Youth Wrestling Club will have an organizational meeting and practice from 6:30 to 7:30 (tonight) Thursday, Nov. 17, at the Game Plan 4 Hope Team E Fieldhouse in Hills.
Terry sees wrestling as another athletic option to the traditional girls’ and boys’ basketball programs.
“Hills-Beaver Creek (School District) has a great group of coaches and athletic opportunities already available, so we are not looking to pull kids from any one program to another,” she said.
“We see a lot of older kids year after year who are not engaged in the current offering of winter sports, most of which we see in other sports for different reasons.”
Wrestling has been a positive activity for her own four young boys.
“We stress to our boys that hard work, accountability, discipline and determination play a big part in everything you do in life,” Terry said.
“It is very rewarding to see all of their work pay off for them when they improve. We would love to see others who participate in the Hills’ Aces club grow and improve in the same ways.”
Terry’s children wrestled through the Luverne Area Youth Wrestling club, which is open to pre-kindergarten through sixth-grade students.
“We have several H-BC students who love to wrestle and, as the current circumstances stand, they can only wrestle up to sixth grade as a club sport in Luverne,” Terry said.
“At that point, they either end their career or change schools, as there is no co-op agreement to allow them to continue beyond that point.”
Terry hopes in the coming years another co-operative agreement could be put into place to bring wrestling back to the high school level for H-BC students.
In the meantime, Hills’ Aces will be open to both girls and boys in pre-kindergarten through eighth grade.
Participants can choose to wrestle at area youth tournaments with a possibility of competing at the Minnesota state youth wrestling tournament.
Parent volunteers will be this year’s Hills’ Aces coaches and wrestling instructors.
“Dalton Engelkes and Dusty Seachris, both former wrestlers, are slated to head up the coaching with several others volunteering to lend a hand and support them where needed at practices and meets,” she said.
For its inaugural year, no membership fees are charged.
“We would like to strongly encourage those who are able to please make any donation that you can to Game Plan 4 Hope in lieu of registration to the club,” Terry said.
For more information about Hills’ Aces Wrestling Club, contact Terry at 605-496-2353 or jamie.terry1107@gmail.com

I solemnly swear ...

Tara Zewiske takes her oath of office from Mayor Pat Baustian Monday morning in Luverne City Hall Council Chambers as a new board member of the Luverne Economic Development Authority. She is fulfilling the remainder of Mike Engesser’s term, which expires January 2023, and then will serve a six-year term set to expire January 2029.

Blue Mound park/recreation area to close during special hunt Nov. 19-20

Blue Mounds State Park will be closed to all visitors on Nov. 19 and 20 for a special deer hunt. The purpose of the hunt is to prevent overpopulation of deer and to protect natural resources.
“Too many of one animal or plant species in an area can start to throw off the balance of other species in that area,” said Tavis Westbrook, Natural Resource Program coordinator for Minnesota State Parks and Trails.
“When there are too many deer in a park, they feed too much on certain trees and native plants, so occasionally we allow deer hunts as a way to protect natural resources and bring the deer population back into better balance.”
Hunts also will take place at some other Minnesota state parks and recreation areas this fall, and access to these areas will vary. Some will remain open to all visitors, some will have limited public access and some will be open only to hunters with special permits.
The deadlines have passed for youth and adults to apply for the permits to participate in the hunts.
The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources thanks visitors for their patience and understanding during the hunts.
For a list of state parks and recreation areas that are open, partially open or closed during the 2022 hunting season, visit mndnr.gov/parkhunts, contact the DNR Information Center at info.dnr@state.mn.us or call 888-646-6367 (8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Mon.-Fri., 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Sat.).
Details on which areas of each park affected by the special deer hunts can also be found in the “Visitor Alert” boxes on the individual park website pages at mndnr.gov.

The best is yet to come

As a little boy I was always looking forward to something. When will Grandpa and Grandma get here? How many more days until Christmas? When is Dad coming home from work? When is supper? When can we play a game, fix a puzzle, read a book, or watch Captain Kangaroo?
As I got older, I was still looking forward to many things. I couldn’t wait until I was old enough to drive, get my first job, buy my first car, or graduate from high school.
Then I couldn’t wait until I was finished with college and started working full time.
I asked my wife to marry me with the wedding date over eight months later, and those eight months seemed like forever.
I couldn’t wait because I was always looking forward to something. I guess the reason this was true is because I believed that the best was yet to come.
I still believe the best is yet to come, and I want to challenge all of us to live that way.
In the book of Exodus, God, with his mighty hand and outstretched arm, leads the people of Israel out of Egypt. God parted the Red Sea, and the people crossed on dry land. They escaped Pharaoh and his mighty army through God’s miraculous protection.
Now safe on the other side out of their enemy’s reach, one would be certain that the people would believe that the best is yet to come. However, the people complained and they looked back. They wished they were still slaves in Egypt.
For some reason, they did not believe that the best was yet to come. Why did they look back with so much fondness on the days of their captivity? Why do we sometimes look back in our own lives at the good old days? Why do we try to live our adult lives looking back in time? Don’t we believe the best is yet to come?
God has a plan and a purpose for each of us. He wants what is best for me and he wants what is best for you. Therefore we need to teach ourselves to look forward much more than we look backward. Otherwise we risk making the same mistakes the Israelites did.
Today we all need to make a choice. Will we choose to believe that with God’s leading in our lives, the best is yet to come? Or will we choose to live like our best days are behind us? Join me and let’s look forward together!

Voters hit polls; 1,700 ballots already in

The Star Herald went to press Tuesday afternoon as voters were still participating at the polls, but local election official Ashley Kurtz was keeping tabs on Election Day processes.
“We have not had any hiccups so far,” she said Monday. “Everything has been going smoothly. We are in close contact with the post office too and will continue to be throughout the day tomorrow.”
She said postal workers have kept an eye out for ballots to make sure they get where they belong.
“We’ve even received ballots that weren’t put in the mailing envelope, just the signature envelope, so they are working hard to help the process,” Kurtz said.
As of noon on Tuesday, Kurtz said her office had accepted a total of 1,714 absentee and mail ballots.
Considering there are 5,582 registered voters in Rock County, that equates to a 31-percent voter turnout long before the polls closed.
Eighteen of Rock County’s 24 precincts are mail-ballot-only precincts, so that accounts for a good share of the early voting.
Absentee voting began Sept. 23, and that’s when people could begin applying for absentee ballots.
In 2020 there were 1,181 absentee ballots and 2,024 mail ballots for a total of 3,205. By comparison, in 2018 Rock County had 459 absentee ballots and 1,454 mail ballots for a total of 1,913.
Kurtz said some voters have been influenced by online disinformation about “rigged” voting and have even harassed courthouse election staff.
“To be honest, it’s been brutal here as far as how staff has been treated by some voters with regard to the mail and absentee voting process, which is something we’ve never really dealt with in years past,” she said on Oct. 24.
But she said the voting process is more secure than ever, explaining how her staff processes ballots at the courthouse.
They get scanned one at a time into a voting machine that records information on a jump drive.
At the close of the polls, the drive gets transferred to a secure computer that’s not connected to the internet.
That computer then generates a jump drive that gets uploaded to the Minnesota Secretary of State Office where results are posted online.
Kurtz said her office has been helping to register new voters, many of them young people and first-time voters.
Voters can check the status of their ballots at mnvotes.sos.state.mn.us/AbsenteeBallotStatus.aspx.
The Minnesota Secretary of State website, sos.state.mn.us/elections, will also carry election results as the precincts deliver them.
See the Star Herald website, www.star-herald.com, and Facebook page for updates and final results.

Harvest 2022 wraps up

Harvest for local farmers wrapped up quickly this fall, thanks to dry conditions that affected yield potentials as well as drying expenses at harvest.
“Yields have been good,” said Centrol’s Mark Moeller of Luverne.
“But with the dry growing conditions, there was some potential left in the field. Most people are happy with what they got.”
Cornfields that received timely rains yielded well, ranging high in the 230 to 250 bushels per acre. Soybean fields also yielded high with timely rains, averaging between 50 and 60 bushels per acre.
Fields where moisture was lacking, especially in August, saw yields drop to around 120 to 150 bushels per acre for corn.
Fields near Magnolia and Kanaranzi were among the areas that received timely rains in August along with areas in Rosedell and Springwater townships.
The Luverne area received rainfall in July that helped sustain crops through the summer heat of August.
Some areas had surprisingly good yields despite the weather conditions.
“The Hills area seems to pull yield out of thin air,” Moeller said.
However, crops located in the northern half of the county received little to no rainfall in August
The significant rainfall helped harvest move rather quickly over the last month.
According to Monday’s state crop progress report, corn harvested for grain was at 92 percent complete, on pace with last year and 13 days ahead of the five-year average. Average corn moisture content is 16 percent.
The fall’s drought conditions led to nature completing most crop drying.
“Guys didn’t mind waiting for the crop to dry in the field,” Moeller said. “With (corn) moisture levels in the upper teens to low 20s, it only took a few days to dry down to the optimal 15 percent — especially on those windy days.”
According to the latest drought monitor report, Rock County continues under moderate drought conditions, while surrounding counties have areas of severe and extreme drought.
“I wouldn’t mind a good rain,” Moeller said. “Or a good snow cover.”
The warm, dry conditions during harvest were the opposite of this year’s spring planting weather. Moeller observed 2022 as one of the coldest springs of his 34-year career.

GEP brings 'Elf the Musical Jr.' to the Palace

“Elf, the Musical Jr.” brings an early holiday spirit to the local area.
The Green Earth Players present the children-only production for seven shows, Nov. 11, 12 and 13 and Nov. 17, 18, 19 and 20. The Thursday, Friday and Saturday performances begin at 7 p.m. Sunday performances are at 2 p.m.
“Every few years the Green Earth Players try to produce a show that features the youth in the community,” said director Shawn Kinsinger. “We were overdue for such a show after the pandemic, so we started researching.”
GEP’s research led them to Elf Jr. which involves 39 children in the cast with no adult actors.
“When the entire cast is together, there is a lot of energy,” Kinsinger said. “The trick is to get everyone pointing that energy in the same direction. That may seem like catching water with a net, but the cast brings it all together for one of the group numbers. It is impressive.”
Elf Jr. follows the movie, “Elf,” closely, Kinsinger said.
Buddy (portrayed by Ashton Taubert) is raised by elves at the North Pole, believing himself to be an elf like everyone else. The secret, however, gets out and Santa (Xavier McKenzie) tells Buddy he can find his birth dad, Walter Hobbs (Britton McKenzie), in New York City.
On his arrival to Manhattan, Buddy is met with the sights, sounds and people of the Big Apple. Buddy also faces the harsh reality that his dad is one the naughty list and his half-brother, Michael (Oliver Carbonneau), doesn’t even believe in Santa.
“There are plenty of roles for all ages of children, catchy songs and a feel-good story,” Kinsinger said. “The show is going to be a great way for Luverne to kick off the holiday season.”
Other characters (and local actors) include:
•Charlie (Noel Henrichs)
•Shawanda (Elaine Nath)
•Deb (Leah Moeller)
•Emily Hobbs (Emerson Remme)
•Saleswoman (Grace Prohl)
•Manager (Taedra McKenzie)
•Jovie (Lexi Drake)
•Santa’s helper (Becca Beaner)
•Fake Santa (Keiton Koller)
•Sarah (Lydia Jarchow)
•Mr. Greenway (Braxton Lafrenz)
•Chadwick (Brayden Luethje)
•Matthews (Deegan Darveaux Stoffel)
•Charlotte Denton (Sarah Prohl)
•Darlene Lambert (Emersyn Roos)
•Emma Van Brocklin (Alayna Oechsle)
•and the ensemble (Rory Nolz, Sophia Nolz, Ricky Nadolski, Luke Nath, Braelinn Papik, Trent Dekker, Emileigh Koller, Harper Hulstein, Kenzi Petersen, Mya Wermager, Daphne DeBoer, Athena DeBoer, Kallista VanGrootheest, Aubrey Nuffer, Ava Lafrenz, Charlotte Rensink, Arya Tollefsen and Nora Tate.
Backstage assistants are Makayla Oechsle and Anthony Beaner.
“These kids have massive imaginations that come up with these big, bold ideas for the characters they play,” Kinsinger said. “The self-esteem they build isn’t only good for the young actors and actresses, it enriches us as a community.”
Helping Kinsinger with rehearsals are adults Dave and Anissa Vis (assistant director and music/costume coordinator), Katrina Brown (choreographer) and husband, Chris, who works with the children in small groups.
“The big payoff is, after opening night, when they see how much the community enjoyed their performance,” Kinsinger said. “Seeing the sense of accomplishment of a cast of kids is different than what you see with a cast of adults.”
Tickets are $14 for adults and $7 for students and are available at the Palace Box Office on Main Street Luverne, by phone 507-283-4339 or through online purchase at palacetheatre.us
