Wiertzema reaches milestone as H-BC secures RRC title

By John RittenhouseThe Hills-Beaver Creek boys basketball team completed its quest of winning the Red Rock Conference championship in Round Lake Friday.Needing one win (or an Edgerton loss) to claim their second RRC title in the last three years, the Patriots got the job done by coasting to an 86-65 win over the Sioux Valley-Round Lake-Brewster Raiders.The win upped H-BC’s league record to 14-0 with two games remaining. H-BC knocked Edgerton (10-4 in the league) out of the title-chase before the Flying Dutchmen lost a two-point home decision to Fulda Saturday.Along with winning the RRC title, H-BC’s win also included a milestone-reaching effort from senior Kale Wiertzema. Wiertzema, who passed the 1,000th point plateau for his career during a home win over SV-RL-B Dec. 14, registered his 500th career assist Friday.Wiertzema charted 10 assists during a game in which he scored 24 points and grabbed eight rebounds.Wiertzema scored 18 points and Zach Wysong netted 23 counters when the Patriots opened 27-14 and 57-26 at the first two quarter breaks of Friday’s game.H-BC led 74-42 after three quarters of play before winning by 21 points at game’s end.Tyler Bush contributed 12 points, eight rebounds and eight assists to the title-clinching performance. Cody Rozeboom and Travis Broesder pulled down seven rebounds each.
