The Luverne High School track and field athletes traveled to Brookings Monday to compete in the Scott Underwood Invitational.
The Cardinals were among 31 teams invited to the invitational, where athletes competed indoors at the Sanford-Jackrabbit Athletic Complex on the SDSU campus in Brookings.
The Luverne boys’ team placed fourth, with 32 points, out of 31 teams. The Luverne girls’ team placed eleventh, with 19 points, out of 31 teams.
“I thought it was another great effort across the board by the kids. We had a lot of great early season performances as well as improvements on last week’s performances,” head coach Pete Janiszeski said.
“It’s what you look for as the season unfolds.”
Luverne was able to place several teams and individuals in the top five finishers of several events at the meet.
Sophomore Owen Janiszeski was among Luverne’s top finishers Monday with a second-place finish among 28 runners in the 3200-meter run with a time of 10 minutes 14.59 seconds.
He was also a member of Luverne’s second-place 4-by-800-meter relay team that claimed a time of 8:38.27. Senior Camden Janiszeski, senior Carsen Tofteland and junior Ryan Fick were the other runners in that relay event.
Seniors Jocelyn and Jayden Hart both placed well for Luverne in the shot put. Jocelyn placed third out of 80 athletes, with a 39 foot, 8 ¾ inch toss. Jadyn finished fourth overall with a toss of 36-05 1/2 .
Sophomore Eli Woodley finished in fourth place in the shot put with a toss of 46-06.
Senior DJ Rock led the Cardinals pole vaulters with a fourth-place finish vaulting 12 feet six inches.
Eighth-grader Darius Dolo placed fourth in the boys’ 300-meter hurdles.
The Luverne girls’ 4-by-800-meter relay team placed fifth out of 20 teams. Senior Elizabeth Wagner, junior Jenna DeBates, eighth-grader Reinha John and freshman Ella Schmuck posted a 10:35.06 time.
The Cardinals also had strong finishes in other events that placed in the top 10.
Monday’s meet was Luverne’s second of the year. With the way the spring is going, Luverne had postponed a home meet March 30 and also a meet scheduled at Brandon Valley on April 8.
The next track and field meet is scheduled at home Tuesday, April 11, and away at  Marshall Tuesday, April 17.
“Every time you have an opportunity to compete, you want to strive to get a little better than you were the meet before and progress toward your goals for the season,” Janiszeski said.
