Panther boys pick up CC wins from LH, Minneota

By John RittenhouseThe Ellsworth boys basketball team won a pair of Camden Conference games and dropped a non-conference test since Friday.Ellsworth beat Minneota by 10 points in Ellsworth Friday before losing a three-point home decision to Flandreau Indian School Saturday. The Panthers bounced back from the loss to best Lincoln HI by 11 points in Ivanhoe Tuesday.Ellsworth, 13-12 overall, hosts Lakeview to end the regular season Friday.Ellsworth 58, LH 47The Panthers picked up an 11-point win during a hard-fought game in Ivanhoe Tuesday.Ellsworth outscored Lincoln HI in three of the game’s four quarters, but the contest wasn’t decided until the Panthers drained seven of 10 free throws in the fourth quarter to settle the issue.The Panthers led by five points (32-17) at halftime and maintained a five-point lead (41-36) at the end of the third quarter.Converting free throws down the stretch, Ellsworth outscored the Rebels 17-11 in the fourth quarter to win by 11.Darrin Weikamp scored 18 points and snared seven rebounds for the winners. Cody Schilling led the Panthers with 11 rebounds, scored 10 points and charted eight assists. Flandreau, however, used a 53-42 scoring cushion in the second half to win by three.Flandreau, ranked eighth in South Dakota, outscored Ellsworth 27-13 in the third quarter to set the stage for victory."Their press gave us some trouble in the third quarter," said Panther coach Ken Kvaale.Schilling scored 23 points, passed for 12 assists and grabbed eight rebounds for EHS. Weikamp scored 13 points and snared nine rebounds. Schilling scored with 1:15 remaining in the third period to give the Panthers an 11-point lead (53-42) that remained in tact (55-44) at period’s end.The Panthers led by as many as 14 points (67-53) in the fourth quarter before settling for a 10-point win.Schilling led the winners with 20 points (10 in the second quarter) and seven assists. Weikamp added 17 points, six rebounds and three steals to the winning cause.
