'Heroes Behind the Badges' blood drive set for Jan. 13

January marks National Blood Donor Month, a time to honor the invaluable contributions of the millions of blood donors nationwide who assist patients during critical moments.

Community Blood Bank, Sanford Luverne Medical Center, the Rock County Sheriff’s Office and the Luverne Fire Department will compete in the annual “Heroes Behind the Badges” blood drive on Monday, Jan. 13, at Sanford Luverne Medical Center.

Hours are 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 2:30 to 5 p.m.

Blood donors support local heroes in a friendly competition to see which organization can receive the most blood donation votes.

The winners receive bragging rights for the year and a traveling trophy, and the blood donations will impact the lives of local patients.

Schedule appointments at cbblifeblood.org, select “events” and Jan. 13, or call Community Blood Bank at 605-331-3222.

All those donating blood will receive a $15 Kwik Trip gift card as a thank you gift.

“National Blood Donor Month is a significant time when we acknowledge how each donor and donation fortifies our blood supply,” said Ken Versteeg, Community Blood Bank director.

He said January sees heightened demand for blood due to challenging weather conditions impacting travel safety, coupled with the cold and flu season hindering potential donors.

“We welcome new donors to our blood bank program, as well as those that have donated with us multiple times,” Versteeg said.

“We look forward to seeing everyone at the blood drive on Jan. 13.”

For nearly 50 years, Community Blood Bank has been a local blood provider to the region and the sole blood provider to Sanford Luverne Medical Center.

Blood donors must be at least 17 years old (16 years old with a signed parent consent form available at cbblifeblood.org), weigh at least 110 pounds, and be in good general health. Individuals displaying cold or flu symptoms are unable to donate.

Valid identification is required at registration. It’s recommended to eat within three hours of donating blood, and drink plenty of fluids before donating blood.
