I want to invite us to consider the following quote from Brennan Manning, a Franciscan priest.  “The greatest single cause of atheism in the world today is Christians: who acknowledge Jesus with their lips, walk out the door, and deny Him by their lifestyle.  That is what an unbelieving world simply finds unbelievable.”
Those are some hard words for Christians. The first time I heard this quote was in 1995, and it has stuck in my mind ever since.
The point being made is simple: How we live matters. It also means that, like it or not, we all live in a glass house.
Brennan Manning’s quote has often caused me to think about how I live and what my actions and words say to people. I will be the first to say I am not always proud of myself. I have said and done things that don’t bear witness to my Christian faith, and I know I am not alone.
It might be easy to feel upset with Brennan Manning for pointing out to us a hard biblical teaching. I heard this quote in 1995, and it continues to work on my heart. How can we use this statement to motivate us to live differently?
It would seem that Jesus is always inviting us to consider how we live. As people who profess Jesus as Lord, what effect do we have on people around us? What impact does our lifestyle have?
Let’s be careful not to over these questions. How we live matters, and it has a significant effect on our community.
Jesus’ last words to us while on this earth are found at the end of Matthew 28: “Go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit, teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you.”
Go, make, baptize, and teach. There is nothing in Jesus’ statement about encouraging unbelief. As followers of Jesus, do we really want to be known as the greatest cause of atheism in our culture?
Clearly this means our mission is to influence our culture to be Jesus people and not the opposite. I know I want to do better, even in Sioux Falls when I have to sit still at a green light for the slow person two or three cars in front of me.

The Luverne High School boys’ tennis team played three matches this past week, falling to all three teams.
The Cardinals fell to Madison 9-0 on April 25 on the road, to Worthington 7-0 April 27 at home, and 7-0 to Blue Earth May 1 on the road.
Head coach Nate Rud has expressed how the boys have been growing better with every meet.
“I am very proud of their progress,” Rud said.
The LHS tennis team was scheduled to host St. James Tuesday, May 2, and travel to Redwood Valley Thursday, May 4.

Luverne traveled to Madison, South Dakota, Tuesday, April 25, losing nine matches.
“We went 0-9 to Madison, South Dakota, six in singles competition and three in doubles,” head coach Nate Rud said.
“Madison had a very talented team which easily would win our section in southwest Minnesota.”

“We lost to Worthington with a depleted squad,” Rud said.
LHS had only four tennis players due to several team members involved with a high school play the same day. LHS also had to forfeit the doubles matches for the same reason.
“Caleb Kracht highlighted our efforts, losing 4-10 in a third set super tiebreaker.”

“Facing one of the best Big South Conference tennis teams with our partial squad went about as could be expected,” Rud said.
  “However, I was very pleased with how Ethan  Nath competed with Blue Earth›s No. 1 singles player.” 
 “The match was much closer than the score would indicate, with multiple deuces in each.”

The Luverne and Hills-Beaver Creek track and field teams competed in the Worthington Invitational Thursday, April 27.
The Cardinals and Patriots were among 12 teams invited to the event.
In the girls’ team scores LHS placed first with 181 points and H-BC placed fifth with 65 total team points.
In the boys’ team scores LHS placed second with 119 points. H-BC placed 10th with 21 total team points.
“Anytime we can place Top 6 in relays or individual events, I feel we are doing well,” H-BC head coach Rex Metzger said.
“Last night we had quite a few, which was fun to see.”
As for Luverne’s performance, Cardinals head coach Pete Janiszeski said he thought the kids had a good night and took steps toward season goals.
“They are gaining more and more confidence with each meet,” he said. “And we had a lot of nice performances on a less-than-perfect night weather-wise.”
Brynn Bakken turned in solid performances for the Patriots with first-place finishes in the 100 and 200 meters (13.07 and 27.25) and the long jump (15-04). She also anchored the winning 4-by-100-meter relay team with Abigail Harris, Brynn Rauk and Layla Deelstra with a time of 53.49.
Luverne had several first-place performances in the meet that also featured a new school record in the high jump. Elizabeth Wagner cleared 5-04 to beat Sharla Van Meeteren’s (Reisch) 1988 record of 5-03.
Wagner also placed first in the 400 meters (1:02.32) and anchored the winning 4-by-800-meter relay team with Jenna DeBates, Tiana Lais, and Cassi Chesley. Their time was 10:00.24.
Other first-place finishes for the Cardinal girls include Augusta Papik’s 18.78 in the 100-meter hurdles and 33-06.25 in the triple jump, Jenna DeBates’ 11:17.97 in the 3200 meters, Jadyn Hart’s 124-05 in the discus, Jocelyn Hart’s 39-04.75 in the shot put, and the 4:24.51 finish by the girls 4-by-400-meter-relay team of Tiana Lais, Reinha John, Ella Schmuck and Cassi Chesley.
Cardinal boys’ first- places finishes include Lucky Dara’s 23.9 in the 200 meters, Camden Janiszeski’s 4:38.21 in the 1600 meters, Owen Janiszeski’s 9:58.63 in the boys’ 3200 meters and DJ Rock’s 12-0 in the pole vault.
Hills-Beaver Creek and Luverne track teams were scheduled to travel to Pipestone Tuesday, May 2, and they’ll participate in the Howard Wood Relays May 5-6.

The Luverne golf team played twice this past week.
The LHS girls’ team traveled to take on Fairmont and New Ulm April 27, placing second behind Fairmont.
The team participated in a Big South West Conference event Monday, May 1.
The boys’ team hosted six area teams, placing second behind Windom.
The girls’ team traveled to Windom and competed against three other teams. The LHS girls tied for third with Marshall.
Luverne is scheduled to travel Saturday, May 6, with the boys’ team playing in Fairmont and the girls’ team playing in Winnebago.
Monday, May 8, is another Big South West Conference meet.
The boys will play in Marshall and the girls will play in Windom.
 
LHS places second in Buffalo Lake
The Luverne girls’ golf team traveled to the Oakdale Gold Club in Buffalo Lake Thursday, April 27, taking on Fairmont and New Ulm in an 18-hole meet.
“It was a good chance for them to get a look at the course before the upcoming section meets,” head coach Chris Nowatzki said.
Luverne took second place behind Fairmont and placed ahead of New Ulm.
“This was our first 18-hole match of the year. The girls kind of ran out of gas toward the end, but we will work on getting better from start to finish,” Nowatzki said. 
“I was happy with how they handled the faster greens. We haven’t seen anything like them so far this season.”

LHS boys’ golf second in Big South West 
The Luverne boys’ golf team hosted the Big South West Event 2 Monday, May 1.
Six area teams participated in the team competition.
Windom came out on top with a combined team score of 168.
Luverne placed second with 169, Marshall took third with 172, Pipestone was fourth with 180, Redwood Valley placed fifth with 188 and Worthington finished sixth with 200 strokes.
Luverne placed three golfers in the top ten finalists.
Junior Owen Sudenga tied for first place with a 9-hole score of 39.
Senior Brady Bork and junior Henry Hartquist tied for third place, shooting a 42.
Other LHS golfers in the meet were eighth-grader Will Bergman with a 46, junior Tyler Arends with a 48 and sophomore Levi Gonnerman with a 49.
 
LHS girls’ golf tied for third in Big South West 
The Luverne girls’ golf team traveled to Windom for the Big South West Event 2 Monday, May 1.
Four area teams participated in the team competition. Redwood Valley placed first with a combined score of 184.
Worthington took second with 196 and Marshall and Luverne tied for third place  with 215 strokes.
“The girls did very well in this wind,” Nowatzski said.
 “The girls just keep improving and that’s what I’m hoping for as the season winds down and we get closer to the playoffs.”

Hills-Beaver Creek track and field team traveled to Slayton to participate in the Davidson Invitational at the Murray County Central Sports Complex Tuesday, April 25.
The H-BC boys’ team placed third out of seven teams and the girls placed fourth overall.
Team scores for the boys were Southwest Christian-Edgerton Public 165, Pipestone 104, H-BC 91, MCC 87, RTR 53, Adrian-Ellsworth 23 and WWG 15.
Girls’ team scores were Southwest Christian-Edgerton Public 139, Pipestone 113, Adrian-Ellsworth 88.5, H-BC 75.5, RTR 65, MCC 46 and WWG 14.
The Patriots did not compete in several events. They include boys’/girls’ 4-by-800 meter relay, boys’ 1600 meter, girls’ 400 meter, boys 800 meter, girls’ 200 meter, boys’/girls’ 3200 meter, 4-by-400 relay and boys’/girls’ pole vault.
“We had a great night on the track and in the field,” head coach Rex Metzger said. “We are always working toward PRs, and we had quite a few again in this meet.” 
First-place finishes for the Patriot girls included Brynn Bakken’s 12.85 in the 100 meters and 14-9.75 in the long jump. She also anchored the winning 4-by-100-meter relay team of Abigail Harris, Brynn Rauk and Layla Deelstra with a time of 53.95.
First-place finishes for H-BC boys included Beau Bakken’s 38-2.25 in the shot put, and a winning time of 1:39.02 by the 4-by-200 relay team of Blake Leenderts, Beau Bakken, Elisha Taubert and Cooper Gehrke.
Hills-Beaver Creek was scheduled to travel to Pipestone Tuesday, May 2, and the Patriots will participate in the Howard Wood Relays May 5-6.

The Luverne High School softball team had a busy stretch of games on their home field in the past week, ending up with a 3-5 record so far for the season.
The Cardinals dropped two games to St. James 5-1 and 10-0 in a doubleheader on April 27. On April 28 they fell to Edgerton 13-6, and on Monday they dropped a 6-4 game to Pipestone.
The Cardinals were scheduled to travel to Pipestone Tuesday night and will play Redwood Valley in Redwood Falls Thursday, May 4.
 
St. James 5, LHS 1
Luverne fell behind early in Game 1 of the April 27 doubleheader with St. James, giving up four runs in the first three innings.
In the bottom of the fifth inning, LHS was able to produce one run when Payton Behr scored from third base on a passed ball by the Saints catcher.
“Offensively we hit some balls really hard but have to do a better job manufacturing runs and taking advantage of girls on base,” head coach Brooks Maurer said.
“We also have to do a better job of limiting errors on defense.”
Amira Cowell was the starting pitcher for Luverne. She went seven innings, allowing five runs on six hits and facing 30 total batters.
“I thought that Amira pitched really well in the first game, striking out six and only walking one,” Maurer said.
LHS had five hits in the first game, two by Reisdorfer and Behr and one by Serie.
 
St. James 10, LHS 0
Luverne batters had a hard time connecting with the ball in the second game with St. James.
LHS had a total of two hits, one by Elizabeth Smidt and the other by Carly Olson.
The Cardinals committed four errors in the game, allowing the Saints to extend scoring chances in the game.
Gracie Nath started at pitcher for Luverne, allowing six runs on three hits over 2 1/3 innings.
In relief Cowell and Reisdorfer came in as pitcher and tried to subdue the Saints’ offense to no avail.
The game ended in the fifth inning when St. James drove in their tenth run of the game.
 
EHS 13, LHS 6
The Cardinals started off strong against Edgerton on April 28, taking a 6-2 lead into the fourth inning.
From there Edgerton fired up its offensive and pulled away, scoring six runs in the fourth, one in the fifth and four in the seventh.
Gracie Nath took the loss for Luverne. She lasted four innings, allowing 11 hits and eight runs and striking out six.
Luverne had a total of 10 hits in the game and three stolen bases. 
 
PHS 6, LHS 4
Luverne came up short against the Arrows by two runs at home Monday night.
Pipestone started strong, leading Luverne 4-2 after three innings.
Luverne was able to match the Arrows’ runs in the fourth inning, but it wasn’t enough to take the lead.
LHS produced six hits, 12 total bases and one stolen base by Reisdorfer.
The high point of the game was senior Carly Olson’s two home runs.
Olson hit the ball over the fence in the first and third innings. She posted three RBIs, clearing eight total bases in the game.
Cowell took the loss for Luverne. She allowed six hits and six runs over 4 1/3 innings, striking out five batters.
Nath came in as a reliever pitching 2 2/3 innings allowing one hit, no runs and striking our four batters.

The Hills-Beaver Creek golf team participated in two golf meets this past week.
The Patriots competed in a Red Rock Conference meet April 27 and played against Heron Lake-Okabena-Fulda/Westbrook-Walnut Grove May 1.
The Patriots will compete Thursday, May 4, with the girls in Adrian and the boys in Mountain Lake. On Tuesday, May 9, the girls will play in Fulda and the boys in Westbrook.
 
Red Rock Conference 
The Hills-Beaver Creek boys’ golf team traveled to Sanborn for a Red Rock Conference meet Thursday, April 27.
The H-BC boys’ team finished the 18-hole, par 72  meet in fifth place out of seven teams.
HLOF/WWG took first place in the team competition with a total score of 358.
Adrian was second with 363, Mountain Lake was third with 376, Southwest Christian was fourth with 387, H-BC fifth with 430, Murray County Central sixth with 431 and Red Rock Central was seventh with 468.
“The boys’ team averaged 215 for each 9 holes. It is our best score so far this season,” head coach Dan Ellingson said.
“We will continue to improve as they gain experience, especially on the putting side of their golf game.”

“Both played through the wind, but hit their irons very well,” Ellingson said.

The Patriots golf team traveled to Rolling Hills Golf Course in Westbrook to take on HLOF/WWG Monday, May 1, falling  166-217.
“The wind was tough for both teams,” Ellingson said.
“But this meet is good practice for them before the next conference meet.” 
The H-BC boys’ golf team brought six players to the meet.

“The girls shot very well. Both posted season low scores,” Ellingson said.
“The girls putted very well with Olson making three putts over 20 feet in the meet.”

The Luverne High School trap shooting team posted scores for Week 5 of the season at the Rock County Sportsman’s Club.
Jacob Henning and JT Remme each scored a perfect 25 this week.
Henning posted a 25 in the first round and finished with a total score of 45.
Remme got his 25 in the second round and finished with a total score of 46.
Other shooters with final scores in the 40s include Tyson Cowell with a 44, Cash Bonnett 42, Samuel Honerman 46, Andrew Kinsinger 41, Lucas Madison 42, Holden Overgaard 40 and Piper Wynia with a 42.
