Lakers blank H-BC-E

By John RittenhouseThe Lakeview Lakers threw a wrench into Ellsworth homecoming festivities Friday.Hills-Beaver Creek-Ellsworth took on the state’s seventh-ranked nine-man football team for the only game of the year scheduled to be played in Ellsworth.Lakeview spoiled the party turning a pair of first half turnovers by the Patriots in to a pair of touchdowns on the way to a 15-0 victory. The win upped Lakeview’s season record to 6-0. H-BC-E slips to 4-2 after dropping its second consecutive game."We could have played them to a stalemate," said Patriot coach Dan Ellingson. "We had a couple of turnovers that gave them good field position, and they scored touchdowns off of them. Still, they had to convert fourth downs to keep a lot of their drives alive. I thought our defense played pretty well."It was H-BC-E’s defense that kept Lakeview from taking control of the game early. The Lakers lost the ball on downs on H-BC-E’s 13- and 11-yard lines during their first two possessions of the game after the Patriots came up with big defensive stands.A twist of fate after H-BC-E’s second defensive stand of the game set up Lakeview’s first touchdown.H-BC-E’s offense, which turned the ball over five times in the game, fumbled on the second play after taking over on downs on the Patriot 11-yard line.Lakeview’s Tyler Jeseritz recovered the loose ball on the H-BC-E 13, and Lakers’ quarterback Davin Wiesen tossed a 12-yard touchdown pass to Derek Louwagie with 26 seconds left in the first quarter. Jeseritz carried in the two-point conversion to make it an 8-0 game.Another fumble by the Patriots in the second quarter gave the Lakers good field position for their second scoring drive.Lakeview took over on the H-BC-E 43 and scored nine plays later when Jeseritz hauled in a 14-yard touchdown pass from Wiesen. Sean Woodbeck added the extra point to make it a 15-0 game with 3:11 left in the first half. The Patriots displayed some offensive life by advancing the ball into Lakeview territory with its first three possessions of the second half, but the threats ended with two interceptions and one punt.H-BC-E’s Tom LeBoutillier recovered a fumble on the Patriot 30 with 9:54 left in the fourth quarter, and H-BC-E put together a 16-play drive that nearly turned into points before the Patriots lost the ball on downs with 2:12 left to play.Lakeview ran the ensuing time off the clock to preserve its 15-point win.H-BC-E will play 0-6 Southwest United in Brewster Friday.Team statisticsH-BC-E: 131 rushing yards, six passing yards, 137 total yards, eight first downs, two penalties for 10 yards, five turnovers.Lakeview: 248 rushing yards, 105 passing yards, 353 total yards, 19 first downs, one penalty for five yards, three turnovers.Individual statisticsRushing: Zach Wysong 20-102, LeBoutillier 8-17, Travis Broesder 2-3, Cody Scholten 5-6, Drew Spykerboer 1-3.Passing: LeBoutillier 2-8 for six yards.Receiving: Wysong 1-3, Spykerboer 1-3.Defense: Scholten 10 tackles, LeBoutillier eight tackles, one fumble recovery and one sack, Wysong seven tackles and one interception, Broesder one fumble recovery.
