Knights prevail in rematch with EHS

By John RittenhouseEllsworth’s 14-game boys’ basketball winning streak came to an end with a one-point loss to Russell-Tyler-Ruthton in Tyler Tuesday.The streak reached 14 games with an 11-point win over Tracy-Milroy-Balaton in Tracy Thursday.Ellsworth, 14-1 overall, plays home games against Minneota Friday, Remsen St. Mary’s Saturday and Round Lake-Brewster Monday.R-T-R 70, Ellsworth 69The Panthers fell from basketball’s unbeaten ranks with a one-point loss to the two-time defending state champions Tuesday in Tyler.Ellsworth showed poise by rallying from two huge deficits during each half of the contest, but the Panthers couldn’t complete the comeback.After sporting some early leads, EHS fell behind by 13 points before rallying to trail 38-37 at halftime.The Panthers faced a 15-point deficit with six minutes left to play, when they battled back to make it a one-point difference in the final minutes. EHS had the ball with six seconds left, but it didn’t get off a final shot."Hopefully we’ll meet them again," said EHS coach Markus Okeson. "Our kids played well, and the effort was there. To climb out of the holes we were in this type of environment was pretty impressive."Cody Schilling scored 22 points, collected seven rebounds and passed for five assists. Bryan Kramer tossed in 18 points, while Aaron Van Der Stoep added 13 points and three steals. T-M-B trimmed the difference to five points with three minutes remaining in the game, but the Panthers thwarted the challenge to win by 11."They shot the lights out in the first half," claimed EHS coach Okeson, when commenting on T-M-B."They have a pretty good ball club. They are a .500 team, but they play well at home.Schilling led EHS with 22 points and seven assists. Van Der Stoep netted 19 points, while Herman chipped in 17 points and collected six rebounds.
