Hills Town records convincing wins in league play

By John RittenhouseThe Exchange Bank of Hills Town softball team rolled to a pair of Border League wins over Hardwick and Beaver Creek.Hills blanked Hardwick 10-0 before rolling to a 13-3 win over Beaver Creek.Dan Huisman and Toby Smythe combined efforts to throw a one-hit shutout during the game against Hardwick.The Hills pitchers fanned 12 batters and walked two batters in the game.B.J. Boom went 4-4 at the plate, slapping a triple and a double, driving in two runs and scoring three times.Tyson Metzger was 3-4 and scored three runs. Rex Metzger, Smythe and Blake Wysong recorded two hits for Hills, which connected for 17 hits in the game against Hardwick.Hills batters belted six home runs during a 10-run road victory against Beaver Creek.Matt and Rex Metzger belted a pair of round-trippers each and Smythe and Wysong added one home run each to a 21-hit Hills offensive attack.Smythe, Tyson, Matt and Rex Metzger recorded three hits each for the winners, while Wysong, Matt Boeve and Halden Van Wyhe added two hits each.Matt Dirks picked up the pitching win for Hills, walking three batters, yielding four hits and recording four strikeouts. Smythe was touched for one hit during a one-inning relief stint on the mound.Brian Bennett took the pitching loss for Beaver Creek. Eric Harnack, Derek Sammons, Scott Harnack and Tyler Bush picked up hits for Beaver Creek.Who’s hot?Tyson Metzger batted .667 (6-9), scored five runs and picked up two RBIs in the two games.Rex Metzger batted .714 (5-7) with two homers, seven RBIs and scored three runs.Smythe snapped a 2-14 slump with a 5-9 performance (.556), scoring five runs and registering two RBIs.Who’s not hot?Hardwick and Beaver Creek pitchers. Hills batters slapped 38 hits and drew four walks during two games, hitting .513 as a team.
