Hills-Beaver Creek School Board members approved the repositioning of staff at the elementary school.During October’s meeting the board gave Elementary Principal Todd Holthaus permission to hire a halftime kindergarten teacher.Kindergarten teacher Shelly Fischer recommended adding a halftime staff member because of the large number of students enrolled in the all-day program. On Nov. 6, halftime third-grade teacher Michele Baker filled the halftime kindergarten opening. She will teach in the mornings. During this time the students will be split into two groups to focus on reading, math and writing. After lunch the two groups will be combined for physical education, music, library and computers.Andrew Kellenberger, who was hired by the district as a halftime third grade teacher, accepted the fulltime third grade position.Holthaus reported that in his opinion the changes are going well for both the staff and the students.Snow removal bids acceptedThe district opened two bids for snow removal during their meeting on Monday night.Arlen Leenderts bid $40 per hour to remove snow from the northwest lot and the south parking area. His rate for the bus garage at the south end of town was $15 per removal. He did not submit a bid to remove snow from the northeast lot.Mike Spath submitted a bid for each of the four areas. He asked for a rate of $70 per hour to remove snow from the lots at the high school, including the northeast lot and $10 per hour at the bus garage. The board discussed and agreed that the goal of opening the job to bids is to find the lowest rate.As a result, they voted to accept the $40 per hour bid from Leenderts for the northwest and south parking areas. Spath’s bids for the bus parking and northeast lot were also accepted.Patriot PrideSuperintendent David Deragisch was pleased to congratulate the 95 students who made the A and B honor roll for the first quarter. The students were individually recognized during morning announcements at the high school. Both Holthaus and Deragisch were happy with the turnout at last week’s parent-teacher conferences. The elementary school had nearly 100 percent of their parents attend a conference, either in person or by phone. The high school had 80 percent of the parents attend. The board recognized athletes who received All-Conference and Honorable Mention honors in football, volleyball and cross country. Those students were also honored at Tuesday’s awards program.
