Girls repeat as champs of LHS Cardinal Relays

By John RittenhouseThe Luverne girls track team successfully defended its 2003 team title during the Cardinal Relays in Luverne Tuesday.The Cardinals compiled 122 points to pull away from Jackson County Central, which placed second with 93 counters, and the rest of the nine-team field."The girls are repeat champions, and we’re very pleased with that," said Cardinal coach Craig Nelson. "The girls gave us a strong team victory. It truly was a team effort."Luverne won three meet titles and placed second in six events on the way to victory.Seniors Tera Boomgaarden and Marissa Stewart won individual events for the Cardinals.Boomgaarden ran 800 meters in 2:32.1 for her title. Stewart, who placed second in the shot put with a distance of 32-9, won the discus with a toss of 107-3.Luverne also fielded the champion 3,200-meter relay team, which recorded a time of 10:39.09. Amanda Saum, Kayla Raddle, Kelsey Dooyema and Boomgaarden formed the team.Saum, Callen Bosshart, Victoria Arends and Maggie Kuhlman placed second individually for LHS.Saum ran 3,200 meters in 12:59.1, Bosshart was timed at 13.8 in the 100-meter dash, Arends ran the 300-meter hurdles in 51.3 and Kuhlman cleared 4-8 in the high jump.Luverne also placed second in the 400-meter relay. Bosshart, Amanda Dooyema, Cassie Pap and Morgan Bosshart covered the distance in 55.28.The Cardinals will run at a quadrangular meet in Fairmont Tuesday.
