Figure skaters win 14 titles in Minneapolis

By John RittenhouseEleven individuals representing the Blue Mound Figure Skating Club captured championships at an event in Minneapolis over the weekend.Nineteen members of the Luverne skating program competed in the Blades of March staged at the Parade Ice Garden Saturday and Sunday.The local talent held their own at the event, winning a total of 14 titles at the two-day attraction.No area skater had a better day than Tommy McCarthy, who captured program, compulsory and spotlight light entertainment at the Freestyle 2 level.Shelby Kingery and Briana Erickson won two titles each.Kingery, who competes at the Delta level, earned stroking and program titles. Kingery placed second in spotlight character and teamed up with Erickson to finish third in jump and spin intermediate competition.Erickson competed individually at the Freestyle 1 level. She won the stroking and program titles and placed second in compulsory and spotlight light entertainment.Krissy Eitreim and Katie Shearer won individual titles at Freestyle 6.Along with placing second in interpretive and third in program, Eitreim took top honors in spotlight dramatic. She teamed up with Marissa Biever to place second in couples spotlight.Shearer won the interpretive title. She also placed second in spotlight entertainment, third in compulsory, fifth in program and teamed up with Sabrina Kingery to play fourth in jump and spin high.Biever and Shannon DeBoer earned championships at Freestyle 5.Biever, who placed fifth in program and compulsory, won the spotlight light entertainment title. DeBoer, who placed third in spotlight light entertainment and sixth in program and compulsory, won the footwork competition.Gretchen Schneekloth and Erika Egdorf round out the event winners from the Luverne program.Schneekloth took top honors in the spotlight dramatic competition at the Freestyle 3 level. She also placed second in footwork, third in compulsory, and fourth in program. Schneekloth teamed up with Brianna McCarthy to place second in jump and spin medium, and third in couples low spotlight.Egdorf won the spotlight light entertainment at the Delta level.Freestyle 3 skaters Courtney Thompson and Lindsay Rust teamed up to win the couples spotlight title, as well as place fifth in the jump and spin medium competition. Thompson also placed third in compulsory and spotlight dramatic competition.The Senior Spirit Synchronized Skating Team placed third in the team compulsory competition.Here is a look at the rest of the individual efforts turned in by local skaters at the weekend event.Freestyle 6: Nicole Willers, second in spotlight dramatic, fifth in program and compulsory, sixth in footwork; Sabrina Kingery, second in program, fourth in compulsory, sixth in spotlight dramatic.Freestyle 5: Jessica Willers, third in spotlight dramatic, fourth in couples spotlight with Sarah Ailts, fifth in footwork and interpretive.Freestyle 4: Sarah Ailts, third in program and fourth in footwork.Freestyle 3: Amanda Kannas, fourth in compulsory and spotlight light entertainment; Brianna McCarthy, third in spotlight light entertainment and sixth in program.Freestyle 2: Erika Rust and Katie Ailts placed third in couples spotlight.
