Golfers, get your GHIN cards at the Star HeraldBecause the Luverne Country Club closed for the season about the same time the final GHIN (Golf Handicap and Information Network) cards came in, those cards are now available at the Star Herald office. The "year end" GHIN cards, or handicap cards, usually arrive at the course after the club closes for the season, so people who would like their final handicap cards for their winter golfing trips or just to see how they ended up for the year, haven’t had access to their cards. This year club manager Anthony Hacker dropped the final printout of club members’ handicap cards at the Star Herald office. So if you’re going to play some winter golf or just want to get your most recent handicap, stop into the Star Herald office and pickup your card.Do you have a talent you would like to shareThe success of the local Community Ed program depends on members of our community sharing their skills and knowledge with each other. The Community Ed brochure for Winter 2006 is now being produced.Should you be listed as an instructor? Do you have a skill you would like to share? If the answer is yes, you need to let the Community Education office know by November 14, the cut-off date to get a class listed in the winter brochure. The brochures, listing Community Ed classes from Jan 14 – May 12, will be distributed through the Luverne Announcer the first week in January. If you have any questions about the winter schedule or would like to volunteer to teach a class, contact Cindy Arends at c.arends@isd2184.net, or by phone at 283-4724.Family Readiness meets Under Armour goalIn September a volunteer group called Family Readiness started raising money to purchase Under Armour for the 73 men and women from the Luverne and Pipestone areas who were recently deployed with the Minnesota Army National Guard for a mission to Iraq.We have been informed by Gina Newman, the Family Readiness group leader, that the goal of $3,300 for Under Armour has been reached. At the beginning of the week the project was still short a few dollars, but a check on Monday for $400 has put the project over the top.Under Armour is a special clothing that helps keep moisture away from the skin in extreme heat, helping to keep the soldiers cooler and drier. If you have made a pledge to the project, please get the donation to Newman now.Newman said she hopes to place the order by Nov. 15 so the Under Armour can be distributed at Christmas. That time of year for head liceThe Luverne school system has reported their first case of head lice among the students.According to Luverne school nurse Deb Vander Kooi, head lice is spread person to person by direct contact or on shared objects, such as combs, towels, barrettes or caps.Tell your kids it’s not a good idea to share those or similar items with their friends.Lice are a very small wingless insect. You will notice their infestation because of an intense itching usually on the nape of the neck and behind the ears. The best way to spot them is to look for tiny white eggs, also called nits, on the hair shafts near the scalp. For treatment options, contact Deb Vander Kooi at the Luverne schools or your pharmacist.Publisher Roger Tollefson can be reached by e-mail at tolly@star-herald.com
