Boys skate well at home

By John RittenhouseThe Luverne boys’ hockey team posted a pair of home wins with a road loss in between during a three-game week.The Cardinals nipped Worthington by one goal at home Thursday before falling by 10 goals to Morris-Benson in Morris Saturday. Luverne returned home to best Fairmont by four goals Tuesday.Luverne, 6-9 overall, hosts Sioux Falls tonight and Sleepy Eye Tuesday.Luverne 7, Fairmont 3The Cardinals scored seven unanswered goals to end the game during Tuesday’s home win over Fairmont.Fairmont led 3-0 when Andy Cole scored once and Matt Harris found the net twice in the first 16:42 of the game.Luverne, however, received two goals each from Jordan Siebenahler, Craig Rogers and Chris Fitzer to rally for the victory.Siebenahler scored with 16 seconds remaining in the first period to make it a 3-1 game, and he tied the score at three 1:35 after Rogers scored the team’s second goal in the second period.Casey Krueger netted a power-play goal with 5:15 remaining in the second period to give the Cards their first lead, and Luverne iced the game with a pair of tallies by Fitzer and another from Rogers in the third period.Fitzer and Taylor Pederson contributed two assists each to the winning cause. Nathan Boler, Derek Elbers and Krueger chipped in one assist each.Luverne outshot Fairmont 40-20 in the game.M-B 12, Luverne 2The Cardinals couldn’t string together consecutive wins when they traveled to Morris Saturday.M-B, which beat LHS 11-0 in early December, continued its domination over the Cardinals by handing them a 10-goal setback.Siebenahler netted both LHS goals, while Aaron Altman had one assist.Tanner Skattum made 36 saves in net for the Cards, who were outshot 48-15 in the game.Luverne 7,Worthington 6The Cardinals ended a two-game slide by posting a thrilling, one-goal victory over the Trojans in Luverne Thursday.The hosts gained a 5-2 lead by netting three unanswered goals in the second period, but Worthington scored four times in a span of 11:12 in the third period to gain a 6-5 edge.Luverne answered the challenge by scoring twice in the game’s final 2:21 to prevail by one goal.Worthington’s Curtis Lingle and Cameron Koopman scored third-period goals before Jason Johnson capped a hat trick by finding the net with two counters, the last one coming with 4:32 left to play, to give the Trojans a 6-5 lead.Luverne tied the game at six when Boler scored after being set up by classmate Siebenahler with 2:21 remaining, and Siebenahler settled the issue by completing his hat trick with the game-winning goal at with 1:44 remaining.Worthington opened the scoring in the first period before Luverne rallied to take a 2-1 edge with a power-play goal and an unassisted effort from Siebenahler before the period was complete.Johnson tied the game at two for Worthington 19 seconds into the second period.Luverne, however, received tallies from Anthony Graphenteen, Fitzer and Krueger in a span of 15:01 to give the Cards a 5-2 lead before the period was complete.Krueger registered two assists for the Cards, while Fitzer, Rogers and Siebenahler chipped in one each.Adam Ossefoort made 25 saves for an LHS team that outshot Worthington 48-31 in the game.
