Boys land team title at Central Lyon event

By John RittenhouseThe Hills-Beaver Creek-Ellsworth-Edgerton track teams traveled south of the Minnesota border to compete in their second outdoor meet of the season Tuesday.The Patriots found success during the Central Lyon Relays in Rock Rapids, Iowa, where the Patriot boys won a team championship and the girls placed second in five-team fields that formed the Class B version of the event.The day featured H-BC-E-E athletes winning a combined 12 events and placing second eight times."It was an awfully good night for both our girls and boys," said Patriot coach Tom Goehle. "I thought our times and distances were very good. The weather became cooler as the night went on, but I thought our kids responded well and competed very well."The H-BC-E-E boys rode eight meet titles and five second-place performances to a team championship.Tyler Bush (5-10 in the high jump), Cody Scholten (107-7 in the discus), Tom LeBoutillier (16.95 in the 110-meter hurdles), Todd Alberty (52.93 in the 400-meter dash) and Greg Van Batavia (2:20.19 in the 800-meter run) all secured individual championships for the boys.H-BC-E-E also won the medley, 1,600- and 3,200-meter relays with respective 3:48.18, 3:37.53 and 8:50.67 times.LeBoutillier, Kale Wiertzema, Alberty and Bush formed the medley team, Alberty, Wiertzema, Lee Jackson and Bush ran the 1,600, and Wiertzema, Jackson, Van Batavia and Bush teamed up in the 3,200.H-BC-E-E placed second in the 400- and 800-meter relays with respective 50.03 and 1:42.83 efforts. Javier Cisneros, Roger DeBoer, Paul DeLeoncepeda and John Sandbulte ran the 400. Cisneros, Sandbulte, Cody Rozeboom and DeBoer joined forces in the 800.LeBoutillier (18-8 in the long jump), Jackson (5:12.82 in the 1,600), and Sandbulte (1:04.49 in the 400 hurdles) placed second individually.Rayna Sandoval and Cassi Tilstra captured individual titles for the Patriot girls. Tilstra was timed at 1:01.49 in the 400-meter dash. Sandoval ran 3,000 meters in 12:45.9.The girls also won the 1,600- and 3,200-meter relays with respective 4:21.46 and 10:22.42 efforts.Ashley and Jocelyn Bucher, Mya Mann and Tilstra ran the 1,600. Amanda and Cassi Tilstra and the Buchers teamed up in the 3,200.Tina Majchrzak (14:08 in the 3,000) and the 400- and 800-meter relays placed second for the Patriot girls.Shelly Sas, Rosie Lewis, Amanda Connors and Kelly Mulder ran the 400 in 56.03. Sas, Lewis, Brittany Helgeson and Mulder turned in a 1:59.62 in the 800.H-BC-E-E will run at the Pipestone Invitational Saturday.
