Local Items From 1884The following appeared in the Rock County Herald on December 26, 1884:Christmas morning, though to all appearances one of the pleasantest of the year, was the coldest day of the season. The temperature upon which most of the thermometers agreed was 36 degrees below zero.It is reposted that Mike Mead left his team standing in the snow near the slaughter house all night, Tuesday night, and the authorities are taking measures to prosecute him on the charge of cruelty to animals. It is stated that a sleeping car can be secured from Luverne to New Orleans for $600 and there is talk of getting up a company of twenty in this place to charter a car. This plan would reduce the expense to $30 a piece and secure the added advantage of going through without a change. The Herald force took a holiday yesterday and offer this fact coupled with the absence of one of our compositors as an excuse for the unusual sparcity of local news in this number. As we shall also be short of help next week we shall probably issue no semi-weekly next Tuesday.I want to wish you all a Happy Holiday Season, and thank you for your positive responses to this column.Donations to the Rock County Historical Endowment Fund can be sent to the Rock County Historical Society, P.O.
