LHS girls win Section 3A semifinal

Cardinals head to championship game against New Ulm

The Cardinal girls’ hockey team competed in their first round of post-season play Saturday when they hosted Windom in the Blue Mound Ice Arena.

LHS took down the Eagles 8-1 in the Section 3A semifinals to advance to the section championship game against New Ulm on Tuesday, Feb. 14, in St. Peter.
The Luverne girls’ hockey team finished its regular season with a 19-6 record after beating Fairmont 7-0 at home Tuesday, Feb. 7. 
 
Section 3A Semifinal 
LHS 8, Windom 1
The Luverne girls’ hockey team came ready to play against Windom Saturday, Feb. 11, at the home rink. The excitement was evident on their faces.
Payton Behr made the game’s first goal at 3:15 in the first period assisted by Kamryn Van Batavia and eighth-grader Tenley Behr.
Junior Anika Boll made the Cardinals’ second goal at 12:10 assisted by Saarloos and freshman Ella Apel.
Luverne went up 2-0 after the first period.
In the second period Windom scored their only goal at 5:51.
Steensma answered the Eagles’ goal with two of her own in the second period. She scored her first at 8:20 unassisted and her second at 9:52 assisted by Tenley Behr and Mallory Nelson.
Luverne pulled away 4-1 after the second period.
In the third period the Cardinals scored four more goals to win the game 8-1.
Kamryn Van Batavia beat the Eagles goalie eight seconds into the period on a power play. Ellie Van Batavia and Apel assisted in the play.
Steensma scored her third (hat trick) goal at 1:27 assisted by Tenley Behr and freshman Greta McClure.
Kamryn Van Batavia got her second score unassisted at 4:21.
McClure finished the scoring at 15:27 in the third period assisted by Ellie Van Batavia and Tenley Behr.
Senior Mallory Von Tersch recorded her eighth shut-out, finishing two games behind Andover goalie Courtney Stagman with 11. In 2022-23 Von Tersch faced 436 shots on goal with 398 saves. 
Senior Kamryn Van Batavia leads all of Minnesota girls’ hockey with 55 goals in the regular season along with 18 assists.
Senior Mallory Nelson finished the regular season with three goals, 12 assists, and 32 minutes of penalty time, with one game-winning goal.
 
LHS 7, Fairmont 0
The Cardinal girls played Fairmont at home Feb. 7 winning a 7-0 game.
Shots on goal for the night favored Luverne, shooting 63 times on net. Fairmont had a total of six shots.
Kamryn Van Batavia got the Cardinals rolling with a goal in the first period at 8:54 assisted by sophomore Payton Behr.
Van Batavia followed up with another goal at 13:38 assisted by eighth-grader Kassidy Saarloos and seventh-grader Ellie Van Batavia.
The Cards went up 2-0 after the first period.
Payton Behr opened the second period scoring at 2:47 assisted by Kamryn Van Batavia.
Eighth-grader Rylee Kurtz scored on a power play at 6:29 assisted by eighth-grader Izzy Steensma.
Steensma then scored at 6:48 assisted by Saarloos.
Kamryn Van Batavia made her third (hat trick) goal at 12:49 assisted by Payton Behr.
At the end of two periods, Luverne led Fairmont 6-0.
In the third period freshman Greta McClure finished the scoring at 1:50 assisted by Steensma and eighth-grader Tenley Behr.
“The girls played well and it was a nice win to end the regular season,” head coach Tony Sandbulte said.
“The girls are starting to peak at the right time.”
