LHS and H-BC boys’ basketball play in Luverne

The Hills-Beaver Creek boys’ basketball team went 1-1 this past week with an 80-67 loss to Luverne Feb. 7 and a 67-60 win over HLOF Feb. 9.
The Patriots, now 9-10 for the season, were scheduled to travel Tuesday, Feb. 14, to take on Southwest Christian and will meet Worthington at home Thursday, Feb. 16.
 
LHS 80, H-BC 67
The Patriots traveled to Luverne Tuesday, Feb. 7, losing an 80-67 cross-county contest.
“We are a much better team defensively than we displayed Tuesday night. We cannot give up 49 points in a half and expect to win,” head coach Wiertzema said.
Sophomore Beau Bakken played a solid game for the Patriots with 22 points, five rebounds, one blocked shot and one steal.
Senior Brock Harnack netted 19 points and grabbed three rebounds and one steal.
Sophomore Sawyer Bosch added nine points, one rebound, one assist and two steals.
Freshman Micah Bush made seven points, grabbed three rebounds and had two assists and one steal.
Freshman Jamin Metzger scored four points. Senior Brayden Metzger, junior Riley Tatge and sophomore Cameron Allen all added two points each.
Sophomore Jackson Gacke helped H-BC with three rebounds and one assist.
 
H-BC 67, HLOF 60
The Patriots played Heron Lake-Okabena/Fulda away Thursday, Feb. 9, beating the Coyotes 67-60.
“In the first half we were not very patient offensively, but once we started moving the ball and working inside out, we found better scoring opportunities which led to our 43-point second half,” Wiertzema said.
“We also did a much better job getting to the free throw line and converting. We were 23 of 32 from the line and made eight straight to close out the game and seal the victory.” 
He said Bosch made two to take a one-point lead with just over a minute left.
“Micah Bush made six straight to finish the game and give us a seven-point victory,” Wiertzema said.
Bakken led the Patriots scoring 16 points. He also had eight rebounds, one steal and three blocked shots.
Jamin Metzger had a double-double game with 13 points with 13 rebounds. He also had one assist and two blocked shots.
Bush added 12 points, two rebounds, two assists and two steals.
Harnack netted eight points, Tatge had seven, Bosch six, Brayden Metzger four and Allen one.
