Junior Legion advances in playoffs

The Luverne Junior American Legion baseball team recently completed a 6-8 regular season.
The team earned the No. 1 seed in the six-team west sub sub-state division.
After suffering an 8-7 loss to No. 4-seeded Windom Sunday afternoon, Luverne defeated No. 6 seed Adrian 7-2 Monday night.
With the win, Luverne is one of four teams from the sub sub-state group to advance to the Southwest sub-state tournament.
Pipestone, Windom and Tracy also advanced to the tournament that begins this Sunday in Pipestone.
Luverne will open sub-state play at 10 a.m. against an opponent yet to be determined.
 
Windom 8, Luverne 7
Luverne opened post-season play in Lismore Sunday afternoon with an 8-7 loss to Windom.
“We were short on guys and had only nine players at the game,” said Luverne coach Jared Pick.
Luverne enjoyed a 7-4 lead going into the seventh, and final, inning.
Windom hit a bases-loaded triple in the top of the seventh stanza.
A defensive error at third base allowed the batter to advance to home with the effect of an inside the park grand slam and an 8-7 Windom lead.
When Luverne was unable to score in the bottom of the seventh, Windom came away with the victory.
Layke Miller led the offense for Luverne. He was two for four at the plate and scored two runs.
Carter Sehr had two hits and scored a run, and Jacob Stroh also had two hits.
Marcus Vortherms scored two runs in the game.
Stroh pitched the first five innings for Luverne. He struck out seven and gave up four runs.
Sehr came to the mound for the final two innings. He struck out three and gave up four runs.

Luverne 7, Adrian 2
Luverne defeated Adrian 7-2 Monday night in Lismore.
The Luverne offense started quickly, scoring five runs in the first two innings before Adrian plated its first run.
Luverne added single runs in the fourth and sixth innings to secure the win.
Vortherms pitched a complete seven-inning game for Luverne.
The right-hander struck out eight and gave up only two runs on four hits.
“Marcus really pitched well,” Pick said. “We needed him to pitch well and long tonight, and he really came through for us.”
Sehr was two for four at the plate and scored twice for Luverne.
Vortherms and Miller also scored two runs each in the victory.
Miller hit a double in the second inning.
