Hills-Beaver Creek High School senior Journey Dwire took sole possession of first place in the Class 3A Conference 1 girls’ standings, as the team moves into third place halfway through the five-week season.
Dwire leads the girls with a Week 3 season average of 20.5 hits per 25 shots.
Five of her teammates rank in the Top 25. They are Danielle Leenderts (fifth), Tara Paulsen (ninth), Olivia Bork (13th), Samantha Moser (14th) and Brooklynne Hubbard (24th).
On the boys’ side, Cooper Gehrke is tied with teammate Weston Kellenberger in 10th place (season average of 21.33). Teammates in the Top 25 also include John Tiesler (17th) and Casey Kueter (23rd).
The H-BC team is in third place after three weeks of competition with 5,808.5 points. Verndale High School leads the seven-member conference with 6,460.5 points.
Coach Travis Dwire told team members prior to the Week 3 shoot that they could easily catch and pass the top team.
H-BC closed the gap with Verndale to a 652-point lead coming into Week 4.
H-BC posted its highest score in Week 3 with 2,225 points, up from 1,730 in Week 2 and 1,853 points on the opening day of the season on April 25.
Individually in Week 3, Hunter Leenderts shot a straight 25.
