What did your george do for you?

Star Herald Editorial

This is the week, folks, the “be a george week” in honor of the late George Bonnema who would have turned 75 on July 18.

The T-shirts have been distributed, and if you bought one (or three), now’s the time to wear it. If you committed to the mission, now’s the time to ‘be a george.’

It’s an exciting week in Luverne and Rock County, where people are already known for their generosity.

If you knew George, you know he was always doing something for others … often without being asked and without seeking recognition.

“Be a george week” was inspired by his generosity and timed around his birthday, but the movement is about more than the man; it’s about all of us doing more to make the world a better place (thus the lower-case g in george).

Of course, the key is to do good deeds quietly, if we can — anonymously if possible, and then enjoy the good vibes that result.

It could be mowing someone’s lawn, carrying someone’s groceries, delivering a hot dish or dessert … or even just holding the door and smiling.

As the week unfolds, we’re hoping to learn about the many creative ways people have sought to be a george, so we want to hear from you.

What has your george done for you? What have you done to be a george?

Message us through Facebook, email editor@star-herald.com or call us at 507-283-2333, and we’ll share your george ideas with others.

Because we’re encouraging giving without recognition, we’ll share the george deeds without naming the georges.

George worked quietly and tirelessly to help those around him, and this week is our chance to continue that mission.

We can’t wait to hear from all those who benefited georges and from all the georges out there who paid it forward.

This is a great week to be a george.
