Miss Gibson won her greatest fame in “The Hazards of Helen,” but some of the many daring feats she performed during the filming of this picture nearly cost Miss Gibson her life. She is the first motion picture star to appear in person at a Luverne theatre.

Giving back to the community

As a thank you to the community, the senior class of Luverne High School spent Friday morning completing service projects as part of the school’s annual Senior Service Day. Students worked on various tasks around Luverne and ended with lunch at the Luverne City Park. Instead of a Senior Skip Day, students who volunteer to complete a service project had an excused afternoon from school.

Patriot girls take home first-place finish at Howard Wood

The Patriot girls’ sprint relays have had success in most of their meets all season, but none bigger than the one Saturday afternoon at Howard Wood Field where 100 teams from five different states compete in Sioux Falls.
After coming up just inches short in the 4-by-200 meter-relay Friday afternoon, the team of Abbie Harris, Brynn Rauk, Layla Deelstra and Brynn Bakken were not going to be denied the chance to stand up on the podium in front of the 1,000-plus fans at Howard Wood Field again.
Strong runs by the first three runners left the Patriots just barely in second place as the anchor runners got the hand-off. Bakken, just a seventh-grader at H-BC, finished the race in first place for the Patriots as she has all year long.
She pulled ahead of the Colman-Egan runner just before the finish line to send the team up to the podium to pose with their first-place trophy in front of their excited fans.
The Patriots ran a season best in the race with a time of 52.53. Their next goal is to go after the school 4-by-100-meter relay record of 51.62 set back in 2019, a team Deelstra was also a part of.
The girls’ 4-by-200 mentioned before came in second place on Friday afternoon with a time of 1:50.80, just 0.17 seconds before the first place team.
Bakken also ran the open 100-meter dash Friday afternoon, placing 13th out of more than 50 runners with a season best 12.72.
The boys’ teams also ran in the 4-by-100 and 4-by-200-meter relays. The 4-by-200 team of Ty Bundesen, Liam Raymon, Eli Taubert and Cooper Gehrke finished in 13th place with a time of 1:37.72 while the 4-by-100 team of Bundesen, Raymon, Luke Fuerstenberg, and Arends placed 16th (47.14).

LHS has strong showing at Howard Wood

Twenty Cardinals competed in the 97th running of the Howard Wood Dakota Relays in Sioux Falls May 6 and 7 with over 3,500 athletes from the five-state area.
Entries are limited, so only the best make the field. Although some events were run as one division, generally athletes competed in three classes – B, A, and AA – with Luverne competing in Class A.
“I thought the kids did an awesome job of getting out and competing with some of the best kids in the region,” said LHS head track coach Pete Janiszeski.
“In the individual events you are competing against all ranges of school sizes, so it is a tremendous accomplishment just to get into the meet.”
Friday evening’s final in the 3200 saw Tenley Nelson and Jenna DeBates starting in the back of the pack and working their way up through the field.
Ultimately, Nelson advanced all the way to second place with a time of 10:57.37, breaking her own school record. DeBates finished seventh in a time of 11:11.47.
Ashton Sandbulte ran a 10.82 in his 100-meter preliminary race, good for the third-fastest time going into the Saturday finale. More impressive was that the 100-meter runners competed in one division.
Other Friday finals included Eli Radtke pole vaulting 13 feet. Several other competitors made the same height, so after calculating misses, he ended up in 12th place.
The 4-by-800 of Ryan Fick, Sage Viessman, Camden Janiszeski and Owen Janiszeski finished eleventh (8:43.26).
The 4-by-200-meter relay team of Lucky Dara, Zachary Terrio, Gavin DeBeer and Sandbulte finished 16th in 1:36.41.
The girls’ 4-by-200 team of Makena Nelson, Isabella Oye, Anna Banck and Sarah Stegenga finished 16th (1:53.45).
Jordan Friedrichsen finished 16th in the shot put (48-4 1/2).
Camden Janiszeski finished 26th (9:59.15) in the 3200. Rounding out Day 1, Jocelyn Hart placed 16th (37-2) and Jadyn Hart 30th (35-0) in the discus.
On Day 2, with high winds, race officials started the 100-meter-dash in the opposite direction, and Sandbulte clocked a wind-aided 10.63, which was good for third place and another school record to break his own previous record of 10.95.
The 4-by-100-meter relay team of Dara, Zachary Terrio, Radtke and Sandbulte placed third in a time of 45.38.
The girls’ 4-by-100 team of Mia Wenzel, Banck, Oye and Stegenga finished 19th (54.02).
All in all, Janiszeski said it was a good day.
“We had our fair share of podium (top 8) finishes, which is awesome,” he said. “I was very proud of the kids for their efforts and performances.”
