Luverne will celebrate its 63rd annual Hot Dog Night Thursday, July 10, with local businesses serving over 15,000 free hot dogs and beverages starting at 5:30 p.m.
The event started in 1962 as a customer appreciation gesture by local merchants and has grown since then.
“Hot Dog Night is one of those iconic summer events that people who grew up in Luverne — that’s what they remember,” said Jane Lanphere of the Luverne Chamber.
“It’s just a goofy night that we all enjoy, and we just appreciate all the great partners who help support it.”
The Luverne Fire Department will offer a water sprinkling, and Take 16 will have live music and a beer tent with its free hot dogs.
In various locations downtown there will be inflatables, Mr. Twister balloons, kettle corn, snow cones, ice cream and Tae Kwon Do demonstrations.
The 17th annual Wiener Dog Beauty Contest will start at 7 p.m. followed by the 21st annual Wiener Dog Races.
The Luverne Basketball Association will host a 3-on-3 tournament for girls in grades 5-8 starting at 3 p.m., and Big Top Event Center will host a beer garden and yard games, with live music starting at 8 p.m.
Thursday’s Hot Dog Night will be followed by Luverne’s Nutcracker Fest celebration Friday. (See the related story in this edition.)
