The Luverne Cardinal wrestlers completed the 2019-20 season by hosting the Section 3AA Individual Tournament Saturday.
Seven Cardinals wrestled in the event, but no LHS athletes earned the right to advance to the state tournament by placing first or second in their respective weight classes.
Junior Riley Cowell turned in Luverne’s top effort by placing second at 113 pounds with a 3-2 record.
Cowell pinned Worthington’s Oscar Galvez in 3:48 during the quarterfinals before taking an 18-4 setback from New London-Spicer eventual champion Ty Bisek in the semifinals.
Cowell bounced back in the consolation bracket to defeat Dawson-Boyd-Lac qui Parle Valley’s Zander Clausen (5-2) and Worthington’s Galvez (7-5), which gave him an opportunity to compete in a true second-place match against Marshall’s Dylan Louwagie.
Louwagie posted a 5-0 win against Cowell, ending his 37-12 campaign.
LHS sophomores Noah Mehlhaff (120), Zach Bradley (152) and Chris Rosin (160) and seventh-grader Jaden Reisch (145) placed sixth in their weight classes.
Rosin (8-26) and Bradley (7-10) both went 1-3 for the tournament, while Mehlhaff (17-25) went 1-2.
Reisch went 0-3 to wrap up his 18-23 season.
LHS sophomore Braydon Ripka (30-18) went 0-2 without placing at 132, and freshman Camden Janiszeski (15-25) went 0-2 without placing at 138.
