H-BC's Gavin Wysong commits to play football at USF

Gavin Wysong was a member of a Hills-Beaver Creek senior class that helped the Hills-Beaver Creek football program accumulate an overall record of 29-6 over the last four seasons.
During that run the Patriots won one section championship and appeared in three more.
This past fall the Patriots finished the shortened football season with a 7-0 record and were named Nine-Man State Champions by the Associated Press.
During the shortened 2020 season, Wysong rushed for 1,068 yards and 17 rushing touchdowns. He also passed for 505 yards and seven touchdowns.
Wysong, who started to play football when he was in second grade, recently committed to continuing his football and academic career at the University of Sioux Falls.
“It means everything to have the chance to play at the next level,” Wysong said. “I’ve had the dream of playing college football ever since I started the game.”
In the classroom at USF, Wysong will be majoring in business. On the gridiron he’ll be playing running back.
Wysong’s faith and religion are also important to him. With USF being a private Christian University, it was a match made in heaven.
“I chose USF because the coaching staff was very welcoming and came at me with open arms and got to know me not as a football player but as a person as well,” Wysong said.
“I love how they are a God-loving program. I am a huge believer in Jesus Christ and believe he is the reason I am able to pursue my dreams. The tradition and family of that program is fantastic.”
Wysong has worked hard to achieve a goal he set for himself at an early age. He also recognizes that he would have not gotten to this point without the help from his support system.
“It feels amazing to know that all the work I put in was for a reason,” Wysong said.
“I always lived by the quote ‘the pain that you feel today, is the glory and success you feel tomorrow.’ I was blessed with such an amazing family and community that supported me and gave me hope as well. Without them, I would’ve had a much harder journey.”
Wysong started playing football in elementary school in North Carolina. His family then moved to Eden Prairie, where he played football from third grade to sixth grade.
The Wysong family then moved from Eden Prairie to Hills. Since seventh grade Wysong has played for the H-BC program.
The H-BC senior said he is excited about his future at USF, but he’s not looking forward to saying goodbye to the H-BC community.
“What I will miss most about H-BC is all my teammates that I have played with over the past years,” Wysong said.
“I will miss my community and the home games for sure. No matter where I go, I will always call Hills-Beaver Creek my home.”

Identity

This coming Sunday celebrates Jesus’ Transfiguration, when Jesus meets Moses and Elijah on the mountaintop. His clothing shines dazzling white, and his true identity as Son of God is made known to the disciples Peter, James and John, as a cloud envelops them. Peter mumbles something about being glad they were there to see this, and should he build booths to commemorate the occasion, someplace to come to remember the event in the future, and out of the cloud comes a voice, “This is my Son, the Beloved; listen to him!”
Transfiguration Sunday marks the end of the season of Epiphany. Epiphany means revealed or discovered, an “aha!” moment. In this season, Jesus’ identity as Son of God is discovered or revealed as he begins his earthly ministry.
Epiphany Day is Jan. 6, when the Magi find Jesus, worship him, and deliver gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. These were the first non-Jews to whom Jesus’ identity was revealed.
As Jesus’ ministry began, he was baptized by John the Baptist in the Jordan River, and his identity was announced through a dove descending on him and by a voice from heaven declaring him God’s beloved.

Jesus’ identity was demonstrated throughout his ministry as he resisted the wilderness tests Satan put before him, as he preached and taught with power and authority (quite unlike the local religious leaders), as he healed the sick, raised the dead, and cast out demons and unclean spirits, as he lived his life in accordance with God’s expectations, even dying on the cross.
We, too, are to claim our identities as beloved children of God, named and claimed by God. My tradition recognizes this happening at baptism, but other traditions recognize this occurring at other times. Regardless of when the naming and claiming takes place, we are recognized, named and claimed by God, and our identity is forever changed.
We, too, should live our lives in accordance with God’s expectations for us, both in general, and in particular. Each of us is to live as a God-filled human being.
We also are each called to unique, individual callings, whether that is a familial calling (to be a parent, aunt/uncle, cousin, part of a “chosen/friend” family, etc), a calling to a specific paid job (nurse, teacher, construction worker, plumber, judge, etc.) or non-paid vocation (expert dog-walker, volunteer with children/youth/elderly, gardener, artist, etc).
Whatever we do, we are to reflect our identity as God’s beloved child as we live out our lives, through our actions, our words, our responses.

This Sunday is the last Sunday before Ash Wednesday, the beginning of Lent, the 40 days before Easter where we reflect on Christ’s obedience to God as he lived into his identity as God’s Son.
We are not called to such extremes, but we are called to live out our Christian identity in this broken world to the best of our abilities. May God equip and strengthen us to do so!

The lost is found

Several weeks ago Alice Hansen lost her wedding ring while working around her Hardwick home.
She searched outside and throughout the house, but the ring given to her by her late husband, Ron, 46 years ago was not to be found.
“I was upset and sad that I lost it,” Hansen said. “I didn’t know where I lost it.”
On Saturday her 7-year-old neighbor, Karsten Haas, found it while scooping snow off her deck.
“I don’t think Karsten understood what a heartwarming thing he did,” Hansen said.
Karsten, a first-grader at Edgerton Public Elementary, decided to scoop snow to fulfill a school assignment called the “100 Dollar Project.”
Since 2008, the first-grade class celebrates the 100th day of school through a giving challenge and a field trip to the bank to see a $100 bill.
The challenge meant that each student needed to earn $12. When pooled, the money is given to a special person fighting a life-threatening disease, or to a family who experienced a tragic loss or is in need of financial help.
This year’s 100 Dollar Project goal is to purchase a memorial plaque for a former classmate, Gauge Sprik, who died in September.
Total cost of the plaque is $359.
Karsten chose scooping snow as a way to earn his $12 contribution toward the memorial.
He made arrangements with Hansen, his neighbor, that at the next snowfall he would clean off her front deck.
On Saturday a fresh layer of snow covered Hansen’s deck.
Helping Karsten with the shoveling were his mom, Anna, and younger brother, Dax. His dad, Tom, was out of town at work.
Anna said as she worked to remove the snow ridge under the deck railing, Karsten followed and dumped the loosened snow over the railing. They were 20 minutes into the task when Karsten stopped.
“Suddenly he said, ‘I saw a golden ring’,” Anna said. “I saw a golden ring, I swear.”
Sifting through the snow, Karsten held up Hansen’s lost wedding ring.
Cries of astonishment and tears of joy came from Hansen as she told the Haases about how she lost the ring weeks before, probably when she took down her Christmas lights.
Anna snapped pictures to document the find and shared the experience on her social media page.
“Every once in a while you get to experience a story that fills your heart with so much joy,” Anna wrote.
“What a miracle this truly was and confirmation that our angels in heaven are always watching over us.”
Hansen said she tipped Haas for finding her ring, a portion of which he donated Sunday at church.

COVID-19 shots given as fast as doses arrive

Three hundred Rock County residents 75 and older received the COVID-19 vaccine this week at Grand Prairie Events in Luverne.
Jason Kloss of Southwest Health and Human Services said local health professionals have had to respond quickly with schedules and communication as vaccine doses become available on short notice.
“I was informed on Friday that SWHHS would be receiving 300 doses the next week,” Kloss said Saturday.
“We are charged to get the vaccine out in 72 hours. … Our clinic schedule will become more routine as supplies increase.”
By Monday morning, 250 people had already reserved appointments for Wednesday’s clinic at Grand Prairie Events. Only people with appointments were able to participate and only people from Rock County.
Meanwhile, 140 Sanford Luverne patients 85 and older were vaccinated last week, and 45 more will be done this week.
“So many of the people that we had come in Friday dressed up for the day,” said Sanford Luverne’s Tammy Loosbrock.
“They were excited, and several said they hadn’t been out of the house much if at all since last March. A few described it as the best Christmas present, and a couple said it was a gift from heaven. It truly warmed your heart to be able to be a part of the day.”
In total, not including this week, she said 630 first doses and 237 second doses have been administered.
“We are continuing the 85-plus group and plan to move into the 80- to 84-year-old group next,” Loosbrock said.

Mixed messages
Messaging has been challenging for residents who are provided information about “phases” and sub-categories of people eligible for the shot. Often the vaccine is offered to different groups simultaneously at different locations.
“We are targeting the 75 and older group and any Phase 1a that have not received the vaccine yet,” Kloss said.
“If we have leftover appointments, we will plan to have a call list for teachers and day care providers. MDH has not given us permission to expand to Phase 1b essential workers yet.”
To be put on the call list, go to swmhhs.com.
“Residents can enter their contact information and we will notifiy them of vaccine opportunities that we schedule,” Kloss said. “We also will use this list to contact people if there are extra doses at a clinic.  We will randomly select people according to priority group.”
Sanford Luverne has focused on their patients 85 and older with the small amounts of vaccine it receives each week.
Counting the Wednesday vaccine clinic, Rock County’s vaccination rate is at nearly 10 percent, which compares with about 8 percent of people vaccinated statewide.
Gov. Tim Walz on Monday announced 35,000 more vaccine doses would be made available to Minnesotans 65 and older at 100 clinics, hospitals and vaccination sites statewide.
Also on Monday, the state launched an online vaccine finder to help connect Minnesotans 65 and older to vaccination opportunities in communities near where they live.
State officials also released a vaccine locater map showing where providers and clinics are offering shots.
It’s found at https://mn.gov/covid19/vaccine/find-vaccine. While the locator currently provides information for seniors, it will expand over time as more Minnesotans become eligible for the vaccine.
The majority of people in Phase 1a have been vaccinated.
This group includes health care workers, EMS, nursing home and assisted living facility staff and residents, dental offices, pharmacies, mental/behavioral health settings, school nurses, funeral directors, correctional settings, and group homes settings.
Phase 1b includes teachers, grocery store workers, fire, food processing, day care workers, correctional workers, public transit and postal workers, as well as the 75-and-older population.
Staff in education and child care settings will be contacted directly if selected to sign up for appointments for the vaccine at a state site or community pharmacy this week.
Local public health departments will partner directly with school and child care programs in their communities.
