Remember When July 8, 2021

10 years ago (2011)
•The Luverne Area Chamber invites everyone to visit Luverne for its annual customer appreciation event, Hot Dog Night.
In its 49th year, Hot Dog Night features local Chamber members giving away more than 12,000 hot dogs and 350 gallons of drinks.
Hot dogs and beverages will be served from 6 p.m. Thursday until they’re gone at participating Chamber members all over Luverne.
The event has grown to include several major competitions and entertainment events.
 
25 years ago (1996)
•Tim Anderson, Luverne, placed among the top 20 in Phase I of the Buick Technician Shooting Competition. Because of his high score on a test, he will advance to Phase II competition at the GM Training Center in Kansas City. He is employed by Papik Motors, Luverne.
 
50 years ago (1971)
•Ben VanderKooi Jr., 1971 Luverne High School graduate, found the competition rough at the National Forensic League Tournament held at Stanford University last month.
VanderKooi was eliminated after three rounds in the extemporaneous speaking category, but he was eligible for the radio speaking competition where he went on to place fourth in a field of 130 contestants.
 
75 years ago (1946)
•Flying received an added boost this week when it was announced that Hardwick’s Air Strip will be opened for the first time. The Air Strip is located on the Pete Hansen farm located a mile east and one mile south of Hardwick. Government licensed instructors and new Aeronca planes will be furnished for flying instructions, and rides, by Earl McDowell’s Sky Ranch.
The strip is sponsored by the Archer Petroleum Co. which is sponsoring scores of air strips throughout the Midwest area in order to provide additional facilities for those who want to fly.
Pete Hansen is the representative of Archer Petroleum Co. for Rock, Nobles and Murray counties.
The strip is 3 rods wide and 130 rods long on nice, level ground and to date about a dozen flights have been made off the strip.
 
100 years ago (1921)
•Chas. Sarver, of Hardwick, last week purchased an aeroplane from Donaldson Bros., of Milford, Iowa, and plans to take up the calling of an aviator as a business proposition.
The machine bought is a Curtiss, one passenger, and during the coming fair season, which starts the first of next month and extends through September, Mr. Sarver will become a part of the Donaldson Brothers’ organization.

Leif Gilbertson

Alonzo Leif Gilbertson, 61, died Saturday, May 22, 2021, in Powell Butte, Oregon.
Leif was born Sept. 15, 1959, to Curt Gilbertson and Susan Horner Gilbertson in Sacramentoa, California.
The family moved to Luverne in 1973, where he graduated from Luverne High School in 1977.
He drove log truck in Oregon. In 1981, he and his brother began driving cattle trucks out of Sioux Falls. He married Dawn Tschantre in Oregon in 1984.
Leif is survived by three children, Sterling, Dakota and Shayanne; two granddaughters; his parents; and siblings Wynn, Chance, Levy and Darcy.

David Huiskes

David Alan Huiskes, 72, of Luverne, died Friday, July 2, 2021, at the Sanford USD Medical Center in Sioux Falls.
Funeral service was Wednesday, July 7, at St John Lutheran Church in Luverne. Burial was in the Maplewood Cemetery, Luverne.
Dave was born April 23, 1949, to Alvin and Dorothea (Kurtz) Huiskes in Luverne. He was baptized on May 15, 1949, and receive his confirmation on June 2, 1963, at St. John Lutheran Church.
Dave enlisted in the U.S. Army and served in the 551st Military Police Company in 1969 and served at the Fort Polk, Louisiana until 1971.
He returned to Luverne and worked with Deutz and Crow Concrete from 1971 to 1973. He then worked for Sweetman Construction/Concrete Materials (later known as MDU) from 1973 to Sept. 6, 2019, when he retired. David worked in different positions including truck driver, plant maintenance mechanic, dispatch, plant operator and plant manager.
Playing cards with his family was one of his favorite things to do as well as playing bean bags, sitting at the lake, fishing, and helping someone in need. Dave’s greatest joys were his wife, children and grandchildren.
Dave was a member of St. John Lutheran Church, Luverne, his entire life. He served as elder for a number of years, the board of education for 12 years, on various committees, drove church bus for 20 years until 1999, head usher for both services for 15 years and coached the St. John softball team from 1979 to 1992.
Dave is survived by his wife, Shirley, Luverne, children, Paul (Rebecca) Huiskes, Luverne, Amy (Matthew) Lee, Sauk Rapids, Minnesota, and Mark (Jacqueline) Huiskes of Shakopee, Minnesota; 10 grandchildren, Kayetlin, Addison and Emmery Huiskes, Christian, Jordyn, Mya and Jaxon Lee, Sydney, Samantha and Ryan Huikes; siblings, Dianna (Glen) Malmquist, Luverne, Darla (Keith) Schmuck, Luverne, Donna (Lon) Remme, Luverne, Marcia (Don) Bork, Beaver Creek, Jim (Mary) Huiskes, Northfield, Minnesota, Dawn (Dan) DeWispelaere, Luverne, and Kathy (Jeff) Wilsey, Sioux Falls.
He is preceded in death by his parents and brother, Darrel Huikes.
Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Soceity.

David Rollag

David Lee Rollag, 78 of Luverne, died under hospice care Tuesday, June 29, 2021, at the Good Samaritan Society — Mary Jane Brown in Luverne.
A graveside service was Wednesday, July 7, at the Maplewood Cemetery, Luverne.
David was born May 8, 1943, to Orville and Rose (Sanderson) Rollag in Rock Rapids, Iowa. He was baptized and confirmed at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Rock Rapids.
Rollag attended the Rock Rapids school system. Following his education, he left the area and worked as a carpenter in various locations including California. He married and the couple had three children, David, Derrick and Jennifer.
While in California, he was involved as a boy scout leader.
He eventually returned to the Midwest, settling in Luverne in 2002. He enjoyed doing small carpentry projects for friends.
David is survived by two children, David and Jennifer; four siblings, Dwayne (Helen) Rollag, Sioux Falls, Darlene VandeKop, Des Moines, Iowa, Sharon Snuttjer, Clive, Iowa, and Rhea (John) McBride, St. Paul.
He is preceded in death by his son, Derrick; his parents; siblings and their spouses, Donovan (Catherine) Rollag and Doris (Diedrik) Nelson; and two brothers-in-law Gene VandeKop and Jerome Snuttjer.

Howard Hoyme

Howard Berdell Hoyme, 97, of Hills died Sunday, June 27, 2021, at the Tuff Memorial Home in Hills.
A funeral service was Thursday, July 1, at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Hills. Burial followed in the Bethlehem Lutheran Cemetery at Hills.
Howard Hoyme was born Jan. 24, 1924, on a farm west of Hills to Emil and Ella (Colby) Hoyme.
Howard married Lois Sundal on Sept. 21, 1952, at First Lutheran Church at Colton, South Dakota.  They made their home at Hills.  He enjoyed farming and the mechanics of machinery.  His hobby was woodworking and he made several pieces of furniture and knick-knacks. His wife died in 2004, and he continued to live in their home until he became a resident of the Tuff Memorial Home.
He was a lifelong member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Hills, where he served on the church boards, as deacon, trustee and usher. He also served on the Elevator Board and as a Township Supervisor.
He enjoyed travel. He especially enjoyed visiting the birthplace of his and also of his wife’s grandparents in Norway.
Howard is survived by his children, Neal (Kathy) Hoyme of Pierre, South Dakota, Holly Willmer of Cheyenne, Wyoming, and Eric (Wanda) Hoyme of Hills; eight grandchildren, Nicole Hoyme (Clint Haffner), Jessica (Dan) Oltman, Michael Hoyme, Kyle (Rachael) Willmer, Kevin Willmer (Jillian Pannell), Alissa (Todd) Steve, Ashley (Tony) Wertish and Andrew (Krista) Hoyme; and five great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; infant grandsons; brothers Neil Hoyme, Curtis Hoyme and Paul Hoyme; and sisters MaeLynn Larsen and Kathryn McClune.

Ruth Roemeling

Ruth Joann Roemeling, 86, Luverne, died Tuesday, June 29, 2021, at Sanford Luverne Hospice in Luverne.
A funeral service was conducted Saturday, July 3, 2021, at St. John Lutheran Church, Luverne. Burial was in Memory Gardens Cemetery, Luverne.
Ruth was born May 26, 1935, to Joe and Jeannette (Post) Berghorst.
She moved with her parents to Magnolia in 1941 and Beaver Creek in 1948 before settling in Luverne in 1952. She graduated from Beaver Creek High School in 1952.
Ruth married Merle Roemeling on Oct. 29, 1954, at St. John Lutheran Church.
Ruth lived on SW Park Street in Luverne for 60 years, where she made lifelong, lasting friendships with her neighbors.
She worked at Northwestern Bell from 1952-1981. She then worked for Rose Dell Insurance from 1984-1987. In 1987, she became a customer service representative for FerrellGas. She retired in 2005.
She fought cancer for more than 15 years.
Ruth was a member of St. John, serving on the Chancel Guild, Little Lambs board, women’s society, funeral committee and various circles. She participated in Relay for Life, delivered Meals on Wheels, Sanford Luverne hospital and hospice cottage volunteer.
Ruth is survived by her children, David (Pamela) Roemeling, Wichita, Kansas, Bradley (Susan) Roemeling, Salem, Oregon, Nancy (Michael) Olsen, Oakton, Virginia, and Kris Roemeling, Sioux Falls; siblings, Theodore (Bonnie) Berghorst, Beaver Creek, Thelma Symanietz, Omaha, Nebraska, and Kathy (Charlie) Ruud, Sioux Falls; 12 grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Merle; siblings, Joel Berghorst, Henry Berghorst, Mill Sweezy, Sharon Flatequal, Barbara Flanigan, and her parents.

Donald Spease Memorial Service

Donald Spease, 87, Luverne, died Thursday, Oct. 29, 2020, at the Parkview Manor Nursing Home in Ellsworth.
A celebration of his life will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, July 10, at the First Baptist Church in Luverne.
