Wrestlers pick up first team win of the season against BOLD

The Cardinals wrestling team picked up its first victory of the season beating BOLD 42-30 in Westbrook Friday, Jan. 21.
In earlier action last week, Luverne fell to Worthington 60-18 and Windom 42-24 in Worthington Tuesday, Jan. 18.
The Cardinals also wrestled Red Rock Central on Jan. 21 but suffered a 40-25 setback in that contest.

Worthington Triangular
The Cardinals produced only three victories against the Trojans in Worthington Jan. 18.
At 126, Cameron McCrary received a forfeit before Hudson Hough pinned Vincent Vanderkooi at 132 pounds.
Luverne’s Braydon Ripka secured the final victory by pinning Worthington’s Moo Bleh at 145.
Facing the Eagles of Windom-Mountain Lake, the Cardinals tallied 24 team points with four pins.
At 126, Hudson Hough pinned Aiden Holmberg before Jaden Reisch downed Eagan Maras at 152.
Jacob Madison pinned Matthew Ekstrom at 170, and Ayden Bonnett secured the final victory at 220.
After pinning both of his opponents, seventh-grader Hough reflected on his wins.
“I didn’t expect to win, and it feels pretty nice,” Hough said. “I took advantage of the other guy’s mistakes and wrestled pretty well.”

Red Rock Central Triangular
The Cardinals secured their first team victory of the season by defeating three Trojan wrestlers and receiving four forfeits.
At 106 and 113, Luverne’s Brody Kopp and Josh Stroh each received a forfeit before Hudson Hough pinned BOLD’s Gavin Hammerschmidt at 132.
Braydon Ripka pinned Elijah Swenson in 1:27 at 152, and Cash Bonnett pinned BOLD’s Hayden Edwards in 2:29 at 160.
The Cardinals’ Jacob Madison at 182 and Ayden Bonnett at 195 received forfeits, putting Luverne ahead in order to secure the team victory.
“It feels good to get our first team win.” Ripka said. “Knowing that we can beat the teams who can fill weight classes just as much as we can is definitely a confidence booster.”
The Cardinals came up short against the Falcons from RRC but managed to win five matches.
Brody Kopp pinned Gavin Willardson at 106, getting the Cardinals off to a good start. Josh Stroh followed up pinning Marshal Willhite at 113 before Cameron McCrary downed Jonah Skarupa in a 13-2 major decision.
After three Falcon victories at 126, 132 and 138, Braydon Ripka pinned Andrew Pankonin in under a minute to add six more team points.
Cash Bonnett, wrestling at 160, lost a close 4-2 decision before Jacob Madison edged Austin Cown 5-3 at 182 pounds. Ayden Bonnett ended the wrestling for the Cardinals, suffering a 5-2 loss.
“Guys wrestled well last week, and we had some tough matches,” head coach Jordan Kopp said.
“I feel like if we had our full team, we could have done better winning a few more matches and maybe changed some outcomes of the duals.”

Cardinals fall to Dodge County 5-3 Saturday

The Luverne boys’ hockey team hosted Dodge County Saturday at the Blue Mound Ice Arena where the Cardinals fell to the Wildcats 5-3.
Dodge County scored the only first-period goal at the 6:37 mark when Carl Schmotz beat Luverne goalie Tyler Arends.
The period saw a total of 16 shots on goal, with Dodge County holding the advantage 10-6.
Arends had nine big saves in the period to keep it a one-goal differential.
Luverne got rolling in the second when Henry Hartquist tied the game just two minutes into the period. Owen Sudenga and Brock Behrend assisted on the goal.
Two minutes later it was Luverne taking the lead with senior Zach Kruse finding the back of the net and Sudenga and Behrend assisting again.
Dodge County responded to tie the game with 11 minutes to go in the second.
Luverne regained the lead in the second period on a Patrick Kroski goal. Behrend and Sudenga registered the assists.
The period would end with Luverne taking a 3-2 lead into the locker room.
Shots on goal for the period were 11 to eight in favor of Luverne. Arends had seven saves in the period for Luverne.
The final period saw a flurry of shots on goal for both teams.
Dodge County knotted the game at three with 12:46 to go in the third period. Dodge County got two late goals with under three minutes to go in the game and escaped Luverne with a 5-3 win.
Period shots on goal were 14-5 in favor of Dodge County and 30-22 for Dodge County in the game.
Arends finished with 25 saves on the afternoon.
The Cardinal boys, 7-7 on the year, will hit the road for three games in the coming week, at Worthington on Tuesday, New Ulm on Thursday and Morris-Benson Saturday.

If I had my way ...

If I had my way, we would have more snow, but never any ice. If I had my way, siblings wouldn’t fight no matter how old they are. If I had my way, families would spend more time together. If I had my way, kids would graduate college and want to come back and live around home. If I had my way, everyone would believe in Jesus. Since I am a pastor, if I had my way, everyone would go to church every Sunday and every church would have a morning and evening service attended by all members.
What if you had your way? How would life for everyone be different? What would you require from everyone if you could decide? Maybe you agree with some of the things I listed at the beginning of the article. Maybe you think if I had my way, you would be miserable. And maybe if you had your way, I would be miserable.
That is the thing about my way or your way, it’s not the best way for everyone. We are human and we don’t see the big picture. If we are honest, we tend to be selfish.
God encourages us to think and live differently. Philippians 2:3-5 says,  “Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit, but in humility consider others better than yourselves. Each of you should look not only to your own interests, but also to the interests of others. Your attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus.” (NIV 1984)
This means that my way isn’t important and neither is your way, the governor’s way, or the president’s way.
What is important is that we respect and care for each other. What is important is that we treat each other as more important than ourselves.
This is and always has been a radical idea, but Jesus embodies it for us. He shows us how living this way is possible and how it is better than living to get my way.
