Seven years ago, the Luverne community came together as individuals, businesses and government to brainstorm on ways to improve this community. The downtown retail corridor was suffering, the community was lacking things to do, places to eat, venues to shop and daily activities. People and businesses were moving out of town. Some of this was real, some was perception, but everyone agreed we…

To the Editor: Some 40 years ago Luverne sponsored a Vietnamese family of 10 children. Although only the oldest daughter, Thinh, spoke English, both she and her father immediately went to work at A.R. Wood. Thinh (now Jackie), who left her husband behind, was pregnant. She had John on Christmas Day, and he just turned 40. We were invited to his birthday celebration in Kansas City on Dec. 19.…

Sioux Falls has center turn lanes. Worthington has them —…

A disappointing controversy arose last week during the annual sale of the Cardinal Coupon Card. The folded card displays the names of more than 50 local businesses offering discounts totaling more than $2,000 in goods and services. The Chamber does the legwork contacting interested businesses, and the athletes do the legwork selling cards. The proceeds are split between the Chamber and Luverne…

A resolution adopted recently by the Luverne School Board is leading student involvement in athletics and activities in a more positive direction. Our young people will be better served by this change. Instead of thinking athletic and activity events as after-school events, the board views student participation in events as part of educating youth. At their May 28 board meeting, members watched…
