Sanford nutrition supervisor earns statewide recognition 

Diana Buffington, nutrition foods supervisor at Sanford Luverne Medical Center, was recently awarded the Dietary Department Excellence award from the Minnesota Hospital Association. 

Redbirds swing past three rivals

The Redbirds captured three Class C wins to improve their record to 6-4 for the season.

Luverne beat Milroy 7-3 June 16 at home, topped Fairmont 3-2 on the road June 19 and won 4-3 against Hadley on the road June 21.

Warren Baker

Warren Baker, age 80, of Luverne, Minn., died on Monday, June 15, 2026, at the Minnesota Veterans Home in Luverne. 

Memorial service was at 4 p.m. Sunday, June 21, at the American Reformed Church in Luverne with visitation two hours prior from 2 to 4 p.m. at the church. 

James Vanderberg

Jim Vanderberg, age 91, of Luverne, Minn., died Sunday, June 21, 2026, while surrounded by his family at the Good Samaritan Society – Mary Jane Brown Home. 

Be a sunbeam

Have you ever sung the song “I’ll Be a Sunbeam”? It was written in 1898 by Ellen A. (Nellie) Talbot for a Sunday school convention. The first verse says, “Jesus wants me for a sunbeam, to shine for Him each day; In every way try to please Him, At home, at school, at play.” 

LHS and H-BC compete in trap championships

The Luverne and Hills-Beaver Creek trap teams participated in the 2026 Minnesota Trap Shooting Championships in Alexandria this past week.

The Cardinals competed in Class 2A Tuesday, June 16, and the Patriots shot in Class 3A on Wednesday, June 17.

Bakken competes at Nike Outdoor Nationals

Elite sprinter Brynn Bakken competed in three events at the 2026 Nike Outdoor Nationals and USA Track and Field U20 Championships June 20-21 at Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore.

Bakken competed in the women’s 100-meter, 200-meter and long jump events at the meet.

Patriots basketball team named Strib All-Minnesota Boys’ Team of the Year

The Hills-Beaver Creek boys’ basketball team was recently named Strib Varsity’s All-Minnesota Boys Team of the Year by the Minnesota Star Tribune.

H-BC made history capturing the Class 1A basketball championship in its first-ever trip to the tournament.
