The following appeared in The Rose History in 1911.   Rock County Village continued from 10-1-20 edition of the Star Herald.   Beaver Creek          The first fire occurred April 9, 1889, when the roller mill, an elevator and several sheds, in addition to several thousand bushels of grain, were entirely destroyed by the “lurid leveler.” The destruction of the town was threatened, but by hand work…

I have been fortunate to be able to hunt upland birds all around the Upper Midwest for about the last 20 years. Many hunters will hunt in some years and skip other years if the bird numbers are not as high as they wished. There is lots of competition for time in the fall. There is great fishing, bow and gun hunting for deer, and ice angling in the later parts of November and beyond. I love doing…

I have never taken a vacation with my whole family. There is a 20-year age difference between the older three children and our younger sister. Because of the age difference, our parents have never vacationed with all four of their offspring at the same time. Until last week. With my brother and dad on motorcycles and my mom, sisters and me in the chase car, we headed south. We also had a stow-…

It’s beginning to feel a lot like Christmas if you are an avid outdoors person in the state of Minnesota. It’s 50 degrees today as I write and there are many anticipated dates I can see from here on the near horizon. One of my favorites is the Minnesota youth deer hunt. This is a special season for youths between the ages of 10 and 17. They get their own four-day season to harvest a deer without…

Question: Is there a law against putting signs along the roadway for political candidates and advertising? Answer: It is illegal to place signs for political purposes and advertising on the road right of way. Highway rights of way include driving lanes, inside and outside shoulders, ditches and sight corners at intersections. All state, county, city ad township roads and highways fall under the…

The following appeared in The Rose History in 1911.   Rock County Village continued from 9-24-20 edition of the Star Herald.   Beaver Creek          The banner year in Beaver Creek’s whole history was 1885. A correspondent writing in October said: “Business lots on First avenue are in demand. An addition to the town plat is talked of in order to supply the increasing want. Buildings are going up…

My kitchen smelled amazing Saturday. The stovetop was a happy place of simmering aromatic good stuff from the garden. Not from my garden. I don’t have a garden. But you wouldn’t know it judging by the abundance of garden produce that accumulates regularly on my countertops and in my fridge. Cucumbers and green beans in the spring. Potatoes and tomatoes midway through summer. And squash in the…

The combines are rolling, pumpkins are showing up on front porches, and hopefully the lights will once again light up Cardinal Field. All this points to one thing – Tuesday is the first day of autumn, my favorite season. Even the name autumn sounds better than the other seasons. Spring and summer are probably tied for second place in the favorite name game, and of course winter is dead last.…

It was while these conditions prevailed that Beaver Creek became an incorporated village. In the summer of 1884 the residents petitioned Judge Severance of the district court for an order declaring the village incorporated. The court heard the petition August 27 and on September 19 issued the necessary order. Colonel Harrison White, J. M. Park and Abram Osmun were named a committee to call the…

The temperatures are sure showing that the fall season is soon to be upon us. It is without a doubt my very favorite season of the year. For thousands of other hunters and outdoor enthusiasts I am sure they feel the same. I hunt almost every day of the season for some quarry. Most of those days are just the last 90 minutes before the sun sets each day. When I leave the house or office, I always…

Last week I stepped back in time. I only went six months back in time, but it felt like so much farther.  As we started the new school year, I turned on my classroom flat-panel display. It’s a large TV/computer screen that I use to teach every day.  When I turned on the screen for the first time this school year, I was surprised what I saw. The same Internet tabs that I used on March 16, the last…

It was almost 35 years ago that I attended my first Pheasants Forever volunteer meeting on a Thursday night in January. I was about 26 years old. I had twins at home that were about a year old. It was mainly a bunch of older white guys all talking about what they could do to increase the number of pheasants so hunting them would improve. I spent my first 15 years with that outfit in the generic…

The following appeared in The Rose History in 1911.   Rock County Village continued from 9-10-20 edition of the Star Herald.   Beaver Creek          For a few months the youthful village was the terminus of the railroad and it at once came into prominence as one of the most lively communities in this part of the state. Being the end of the railroad, it became the distributing point for the…

If you are like me, the events of Sept. 11, 19 years ago, will be at the forefront of your thoughts Friday. Officially the day is now called “Patriot Day” as a national observance to honor the memory of those killed in the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks. It was first observed in 2002 after the proclamation by President George W. Bush. In 2009, president Barack Obama rededicated it as “Patriot Day and…

Seventy-some years ago our grandparents would not have thought it was possible. We were at a fundraiser for a community member who’d received a discouraging diagnosis. Standing in the shade, we reflected on who we were and from where we had come. The Norwegian shared stories his mother told of German-occupied Norway. Her childhood memories included hiding in the house listening to the footsteps…

The following appeared in The Rose History in 1911.   Rock County Village continued from 9-3-20 edition of the Star Herald.   Beaver Creek          Hardly had the location of the site been announced in September when preparations were made by several persons to engage in business in the prospective town. Colonel Harrison White, who was destined to play such an important part in the history of the…
