Members of this group consist of persons of age 75 and older. The following appeared in The Rock County Herald on September 23, 1943. (Continued from last week, where Herbert recounted his 1888 blizzard experience.)   With the clotheslines to follow, the neighbor…

A year ago at this time my family celebrated my mom’s 80th birthday, which was May 11. We pulled out all the stops and had a day-long party concluding with Mom serving cake to 34 of her favorite descendants. This year, we will not celebrate Mom’s 81st birthday on earth but will rejoice that she is celebrating her first birthday in heaven. A few weeks back, I announced an April date for the next “…

When you read about the conservation efforts of the current-day participants, there are many great stories to read about. I was able to meet five very unique people back in 2014. These were the finalists in the Field and Stream Heroes of Conservation contest. I was fortunate enough to be among them. They hailed from all over the United States. There were folks who were cleaning up rivers in the…

We had cake in the office Tuesday to celebrate my 30 years as Star Herald editor. I love what I do, and I cherish the role of a weekly paper in a community, so it’s definitely worth celebrating. Thirty years sounds impressive, but it’s just on par with countless feature stories we’ve written about people in their jobs for 30 or more years. When I started at the Star Herald in April 1993, Charlie…

Spring rummage sale (May 3-6) and the citywide spring cleanup (May 1-5) are just around the corner. The citywide cleanup event is one of the nicest perks the city offers. There are rules to follow as to what you can place by the curb for free pickup. The citywide cleanup also draws a fair number of out-of-town treasure seekers as well as locals. Truth be told, I’ve harvested a treasure or two…

Earlier in March I gave you nature indicators when to plant what for your vegetable garden. I was reminded when I saw all the pre-emergent crabgrass preventer in stores that I had not given you that indicator, which is when the lilac buds are ready to open, but not yet open. Crabgrass is an annual weed, and the seed will not germinate until the ground is warm. These preventers are pre-emergent,…

Are you a procrastinator? I know I am. Dozens of household and work-related tasks go uncompleted or finished at the very last minute. Procrastination drives me crazy, and it’s become a habit I am determined to break. To help me break the habit, my daughter sent me a podcast by Mel Robbins called “The Only Way to Stop Procrastinating (Based on Research).” It’s worth a listen. (Of course, the…

Question: Are smoked tail lights illegal in Minnesota? Answer: Minnesota law states that “tail lamps shall be plainly visible from a distance of 100 feet to the rear during normal sunlight and at night.” The same goes for turn signals and headlights. Smoking, tinting, covering or placing any material over tail lights, brake lights, headlights or turn signals would be illegal and unsafe as they…

Like most of you, I have an opinion about the proposed 75-foot-tall plastic nutcracker intended to enhance tourism by drawing travelers off I-90. My opinion is, “Not in my back yard!” However, I live on the north end of Luverne and the nutcracker will be on the south end of Luverne, so it won’t be in my backyard. Therefore, I’m good with the whole plan. I’ve learned a great coping skill from my…

Don’t know about you, but I am ready for baseball, track, golf, tennis and some softball. Our high school spring sports preview section is in today’s paper. Right out of the starting blocks, many of the scheduled games and events have been rescheduled because of winter hangover. The problem with postponing spring games is that the window to reschedule them is so short. Compounding that problem…

It is Sunday afternoon, and I just went for a walk in my yard. I see the tulips are 2-3 inches tall as are the alliums where the snow has melted. That is exciting, and it also means I need to get out there very soon to clean off the perennials or I’ll be stepping on shoots that I can’t see when I am working. My hesitation is that once I clean off last year’s debris, hungry critters will easily…

To say that I am happy to see our snow cover disappearing is an understatement! Snow is melting in spite of the temp being slightly above freezing, and that is a blessing. I am not seeing much water running, so hopefully what is melting is soaking into the ground to replenish our deficit from last year. Visiting some friends last week, the “guy gardener” asked me about his unhappy-looking…
