
Marvin Leroy Laackmann was born on Jan. 29, 1935, to Herman, Jr. and Fern (Hawes) Laackmann in Luverne, Minnesota. He was raised on the farm 12 miles northwest of town. Growing up on the farm, he helped with the daily chores and seasonal work. He attended country school through the eighth grade and high school in Jasper, Minnesota, graduating in 1952. He then enrolled at South Dakota State University in Brookings, South Dakota. Following school, he worked road construction for a short time. He then chose to enter the United States Army to serve his country. While in the service, his dad was involved in a bad accident and Marvin was needed back home to tend to the farming operation.
On April 1, 1956, Marvin was united in marriage to Doris Johnson at the Jasper Evangelical Lutheran Church. They made their home on the farm in Springwater Township where they were blessed with two children. Marvin eventually took over the family operation and farmed the land and tended to the livestock until his retirement in 1996. The couple then moved into Luverne and Marvin cared for Doris through her diagnosis with Pick’s Disease. She preceded him in death on June 13, 2003.
Marvin continued living in their home in town and then he moved to the Tuff Memorial Nursing Home in Hills, Minnesota, on October 10, 2024.
On Friday, February 7, 2025, Marvin died at the Sanford Luverne Medical Center under hospice care at the age of 90 years and nine days.
Visitation was Monday, Feb. 10, from 4-8 p.m. at the Hartquist Funeral Home in Luverne. Funeral service was Tuesday, Feb. 11, at 10 a.m. at the Hartquist Funeral Home in Luverne. A private family burial with military honors followed at Maplewood Cemetery in Luverne.
