On Monday Rock County 4-H’ers were busy bringing general projects to the exhibit building on the fairgrounds in Luverne. Each exhibitor talked with a judge, who will award the 4-H’er with a purple, blue, red or white ribbon.
Hunters can apply for special youth deer hunt permits through Friday, Aug. 19, to hunt in several state parks in Minnesota.
The Blue Mounds State Park special youth hunt will be Nov. 19-20. The number of participants is limited to 10, with a bag limit of two bucks.

Strong real estate sales in Rock County are driving market values higher in 2023.
The higher values are based on sales from Oct. 1, 2020, to Sept. 30, 2021, in Rock County. There were 185 “arm’s length” parcel sales recorded in the Rock County Land Records Office during that timeframe.

A 57-percent increase in their home’s assessed market value for 2023 prompted Greg and Margaret Kuiper of rural Luverne to question the valuation process used in the county at the June 28 Board of Equalization meeting.
“There seems to be some discrepancy as a home is appraised or assessed as far as I am concerned,” Greg Kuiper said. “I just want to see it being an equal process.”

Duininck Inc. of Prinsburg began widening the shoulders last week along County Road 4 east of Luverne from the Rock River bridge to County Road 9 near the radio station. The shoulder work (shown above from Friday) is completed and will be paved in early August during a mill and overlay of County Road 4 from the Rock River to Magnolia.
Rock County commissioners unanimously passed a one-year moratorium halting the sale of hemp-derived THC food and beverages in Rock County.
The county’s action Tuesday on the moratorium is in response to the state’s legalization of tetrahydrocannabinols, which began July 1.

Living Rock Church pastor Billy Skaggs survived two kidney transplants in his lifetime only to be diagnosed with cancer last summer.
