Wenzel: September is Fall Prevention Awareness Month

September is National Fall Prevention Awareness Month, a time to focus on ways to stay healthy, strong and balanced.

Here are some tips to reduce your chances of falling:

Exercise: Do exercises that make your legs stronger and improve your balance, like SAIL.

Have your eyes checked: Have a doctor check your vision annually, and keep any glasses or contact prescriptions up to date.

Make your home safer: Install grab bars and stair railings. Remove items you could trip over such as floormats.

Talk to your doctor: Ask your doctor to evaluate your risk of falling and provide tips to help you stay balanced.

Stay Active and Independent for Life (SAIL)

This free, volunteer-led class is designed to reduce the risk of falling for participants. You will learn how to perform exercises that improve strength, balance and fitness. This class can accommodate mobility issues as exercise can be done seated or standing. Come join a SAIL class near you and have fun hanging out with other seniors. Call our office at 507-283-5064 for more information regarding dates and times for classes being held in our community.
