Three more league wins for Redbirds

The Luverne Redbirds won three more games this week, all in the Gopher-First Nite League, to run their league record to 9-2 and overall record to 11-2 on the season.
The Redbirds defeated the Lakefield Horned Frogs 17-7 in a 10-run rule seven-inning game at Redbird Field June 15 before holding on for a close 7-6 win in Adrian Friday night.
On Sunday, Luverne traveled to Hadley and exploded for 25 runs in seven innings against the Buttermakers and earned a 25-13 victory.
The Birds were scheduled to host the Pipestone A's Wednesday night (June 22) at Redbird Field before hosting Brookings Friday night in a non-league contest.
Luverne will then play two road games on Sunday. The Redbirds are scheduled to play Fox Lake at 2 p.m. and Fairmont at 5 p.m.
 
Luverne 17, Lakefield 7
The Lakefield Horned Frogs came to Redbird Field Wednesday night, June 15, for a league contest against the Redbirds.
The hosts had a 10-6 advantage after five innings before Luverne scored two in the sixth and seven more in the seventh to reach the ten-run rule and end the game after seven innings.
With two out and a nine-run advantage in the bottom of the seventh and Derek Lundgren at bat, Cade Wenninger stole third base and Colby Crabtree stole second. When Lundgren hit a line drive single to left field, Wenninger scored on his 20th birthday to end the game with a victory.
The Birds stole eight total bases, including five by Cade Wenninger and two by Crabtree.
Gaige Nath led the Redbird offense going three for five, including a double and a single. He scored two runs and recorded four RBIs in the game.
Lundgren tallied two runs and three RBIs off of two hits.
Newt Johnson plated three runs while Ben Serie, Brooks Maurer and Cade Wenninger had two RBIs each.
In all, the Redbirds collected 17 hits in the game.
Jake Haugen was on the mound for six innings for Luverne. He gave up eight hits and six runs while striking out seven and walking two.
Maurer came in to pitch the seventh inning, giving up one hit and one run. He struck out one and walked two.

Luverne 7, Adrian 6
The Luverne Redbirds came home from Adrian Friday night with a close 7-6 victory over the A's.
Luverne scored single runs in the top of the first and second innings before opening up for four more runs in the fourth inning.
The inning began with singles by Lundgren, Johnson and Ben Serie. All three runners then scored when Logan Norman hit a three-RBI double. Crabtree then hit a double that scored Norman.
Adrian answered with three runs in the bottom of the fourth to cut the lead in half to 6-3.
Each team scored an additional run in the fifth to bring the score to 7-4.
The A's cut the lead again by scoring two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to get within one run of Luverne.
When neither team scored in the final two innings, the Redbirds escaped with a 7-6 win.
Serie threw seven innings for Luverne. He allowed six hits and six runs while striking out 13 A's.
Cade Wenninger came to the mound for 1 1/3 innings and gave up one hit before Lundgren came in to record the final two outs.

Luverne 25, Hadley 13
It was an offensive explosion when the Redbirds traveled to Hadley for a hot Sunday afternoon game.
Luverne tallied an impressive 25 runs off 20 hits in the game.
All nine Redbird batters recorded hits, with six of them tallying multiple hits.
Lundgren was four for four at the plate and scored five runs in the game while adding four RBIs.
Skyler Wenninger, Ethan Beyer and Serie, who also scored four runs, had three hits each in the contest.
Serie blasted two home runs and Johnson had one.
The Birds set the tone of the game early by plating nine runs in the top of the first inning before the Buttermakers even got to bat.
Hadley answered with six runs in the second before Luverne scored nine more runs in the third to reach an 18-6 lead after three.
The Buttermakers had another six-run inning in the fifth, but the Redbirds kept adding runs. When the score was 25-13 at the end of five, the game ended due to the ten-run rule.
Lundgren pitched 4 1/3 innings, giving up 11 runs off five hits.
Beyer pitched the remainder of the game. He gave up three hits and two runs while striking out six.
